Orange bill excessive

The Hero will connect pretty much all the time I'm afraid, it's a data hungry machine. You can (and should) turn off the always on data connection if you've got a low data usage limit.
To do this, from one of your homescreens-

Push the menu button
Tap Wireless Controls
Then tap Mobile network settings
Uncheck Enable always-on mobile

To be honest, were I you, I'd probably consider turning off the 2G/3G connection altogether and only turning it on as and when you need it. HTC have a dongle that does the job for you. If you haven't found it already, you can get it by long-pressing on a blank section of one of your homescreens, then tapping HTC widget and then Settings. There's a Mobile network widget that you can use to quickly turn on/off your data connection.

I have yet to see what my first bill is.
In standard trim, my Hero (on orange) had a bookmark to send me to my account page online, so I could keep an eye on it.
Since rooting and romming, it's gone. I tried asking at a couple of Phone places in Bluewater last weekend, but nobody (not even Orange) knew what I was on about.
Orange guy told me "orange don't have anything like that" - he was still unhelpful after I explained that it came with the bookmark as standard......

anyone know what it is?

By mistake Orange have given me 2 lots of 500mb (listed separately) - they know but said I could keep it:) However in since Sept 10 when my new contract started I've only used 60mb doing a variety of things and also letting most things update automatically. This is because I use wi-fi in the evenings and when I'm at home at weekends.
I think 500mb is fine for someone who has wi-fi at home as long as you don't use the phone for streaming media or downloading lots of apps.

That's one of the reasons I bought it. I got unlimited data on my iPhone contract, T-Mobile offer it - ever "3" have been offering it for ages now.

Come on Orange, get with it.

I do have wi-fi at home, but I'm not there all that much these days....

You are right - Orange really need to play catchup with their competitors with regard to data - I factored in my home wifi usage before agreeing to the measly 500mb but having seen my usage so far, think I might even be able to do a bit of streaming music as well. Having the extra 500mb gives me a nice safety net for this but based on my usage so far this month I'm not sure if I will need it.

How are you all using so much data? I'm on an Orange contract with the 500mb/month deal, and even though I tried to kill it, I only managed to use 70mb...and that was with light youtube and beebplayer usage...

I use 70mb in half an hour sometimes.

Depends how you've got your phone set up...if you have a busy email addy and the phone is constantly downloading emails via mobile 3g then you can use 70mb in a day just for that.

If you are using just 70mb then IMHO you have bought the wrong phone.

I've had my Hero just under one month and so far my mobile use is 2gb and WiFi Is 1.5gb.... I cannot go on contract with orange cos they only allow a measly. 500mb...so I'm on payg and pay 5 quid for 7 days unlimited use...its the only way.

I think you'll find that 70MB/day of email is pretty rare for most people, actually. ;)

That depends on what you do with the phone. Not everyone sees it as a replacement for their desktop PCs. I don't feel the need to have every email pushed to the handset for example, only the ones addressed directly to me.

Measly for you maybe, but for others (myself included) it's perfectly adequate. As I said, everyone's usage pattern will be different.

Eh, I use it for facebook, twitter and gmail access. There's not loads going through my gmail account, I could have it access the work account too, but I feel no need to. Obviously I use the browser for other light stuff, news feeds etc, but apart from that...

I would say 70mb/day is excessive for e-mail, unless it's attachment heavy e-mail. But then if you're that dependent upon e-mail pushed through a phone, may I humbly suggest your needs may be better served by one of RIM's devices ;).

Oh yeah I'm not saying everyone has their phones set up the same...but I have mine set up for gmail and Hotmail, not to mention weather updating and various social website...plus I surf in total a couple of hours a day and 500mb is IMHO not adequate as a limit for a company selling a phone like the Hero... the Hero, when set up properly with all its Bells and whistles can easily go over 500mb without even trying that hard. If Orange are churning out phone like The Hero and soon to be iPhone then I'm sorry but they need to provide unlimited internet access...even if its
