Crazy but I am not surprised.

Times may be changing but Apple is remaining the same.

Is it just me, or is history repeating itself here?

Many years ago, Apple created a different, revolutionary computer operating system. But since Steve Jobs is such a control freak, this system was completely closed. Their software could only work with their hardware. It took off but one of Jobs' former employees, Bill Gates, founded a company which created an open source operating system. And as a result, any hardware manufacturer could make hardware using that operating system. The consumer was given better hardware at lower prices, and much more variety. While Apple might be the highest selling computer manufacturer, there is no doubt that Microsoft's OS is the most used.

Apple entered the smartphone industry with a bang, creating a revolutionary touchscreen (while there were touchscreens out, this one used an operating system which was different from all) smartphone. It sold like hotcakes. Along comes a new very good, very capable touchscreen operating system which uses an open platform founded by a company which the CEO used to serve on the Apple board. Any hardware manufacturer can create a phone that uses this operating system. Once again, as a result, better hardware and much more variety. While Apple's iPhone may be the highest selling smartphone in this country, Android is now the most used smartphone OS (and it only took like 1 year. Tho in this 1 year, it boasts an app market of over 50k which is pretty amazing).

This is exciting...we'll have to see what the rest of 2010 has in store with the release of iphone 4G and OS 4.0. I hope that most of the number apple generates will be with existing users rather than new.

I get the point you are making, however I'm pretty sure Bill Gates has never been an Apple employee. I'm also pretty sure that Microsoft was already in the software business before their initial release of windows. Lastly Neither Microsoft nor Apple came up with the GUI idea (or the mouse for that Matter). Xerox invented those and showed their invention to both Apple and Microsoft (and others) because, IIRC, they didn't consider it that important at the time. That is what apple and Microsoft based their early GUI's on. That said, you are right, that Microsoft did work on the initial development of the macintosh GUI while at the same time developing their own, secretly, for use with IBM machines.

This isn't surprising really. Remember that report is only based on traffic to the AdMob servers, nothing else.

There are several factors that are going to push Android over the iPhone in these statistics.

1. Android has a lot more good free apps supported by AdMob whereas the iPhone the majority of good apps are pay apps, not ad supported.

2. I think the majority of Android users are more likely to explore their phone whereas a lot of people have iPhones, because it's an iPhone and don't use it for much more than they would any other phone.

3. Didn't I read something about Apple creating their own Ad platform? In which case it's normal that iPhone traffic to Admob will start to decline.

Yes but keep in mind iPhone is only sold by one carrier, droid is sold by all.. I always wondered how big iphone would be if all carriers sold it...I hope to get my incredible next week...cant wait..

Up here in Canada you can get an iPhone from just about all of the carriers (Rogers, Bell (as of late late last year), Telus, Fido, and Virgin Mobile). My brother just got one of the iPhones from Bell not too long ago (though apparently they didn't tell him that the one he wanted wasn't the latest version - he was none too happy about that).

I've been with each of those carriers at least once (except Virgin) and the only one I hadn't liked was Fido. That was only because (at the time) Fido didn't have coverage down where my grandmother lived - they've since been taken over by Rogers and had their coverage area expanded.

Isthmus - you also watched Pirates of Silicon Valley huh? I got to watch that in school. Really neat the first time I saw it but not so much after it was on TV seven times a week for six months (which of course meant my dad had to put it on even though he'd already seen it a million times T_T)

Wonder if there's stats for Canada only somewhere? Might be something to Google.

Apple's stubborn attitude in the US market has led to this. Had Apple released (even if different version) the iPhone with AT&T and VZW, I would bet willing to be that the US numbers would be AT LEAST double. VZW is the largest carrier in the US. I refuse to leave Verizon due to the signal quality, so while all of my friends (and I am in my mid 30s) where buying iPhones (and complaining about dropped calls), I stuck with my dumb phone FULL OF ENVY. I would have bought one LONG ago had it been available on VZW. Don't get me wrong, Apple has done VERY well with the iPhone, but it could have been so much more.

When I started seeing Droid rumors popping up on Engadget, etc, I was sold. I have no need for an iPhone now, as I much prefer the open environment of Android.

Hell, even my Apple addicted friend just switched him and his wife to Droids because he couldn't stand T-Mobile's signal problems (he used a jailbroken iPhone on T-Mob). Btw, this guy has EVERY Newton model ever made, along with most iterations of the Mac, so it's not like it was an easy decision for him!

**EDIT** And Gates was never employed by Jobs (or Apple) btw...They DID enter into a relationship with Apple (after M$ was already up and running), and gleaned what they needed to off Apple to make Windows...
