Clearing this doesn't affect applications you've already installed.

Oddly enough, I'd never noticed this in my application manager before. I was noticing that even after clearing out my cache using Cachemate my phone was unusually low on memory. I checked MANAGE APPLICATIONS and sorted by size and noticed a few caches that needed to be cleared, including an astounding 13MB in PACKAGE INSTALLER!

Now I keep an eye on my memory and check MANAGE APPLICATIONS once a week or so.

Weird! I have never cleared cache on Package Installer, and so, after you mentioned it, I looked, and it is greyed out, which mean no cache to clear. Hmmm. I wonder what this "app" is realy?

It's the app used to install other apps. I think the cache in it is basically a temp folder similar to when you install on your PC. For whatever reason something caused the package installer to keep 13MB in the cache and was eating my memory.

I've installed quite a few things since then and my package installer has stayed empty now.

Just something to keep an eye on.
