Root [AT&T] S3 Rooted, cannot update. stuck 4.0.4

Just bought a Galaxy S3 from someone and he always had it rooted, so he factory reset the phone for me before he sold it at least but setting up, im having problems updating the firmware (standard method). at first it couldnt even register Device.

So i clicked 'unroot device' in SuperSU then it worked to download package.

After package downloaded, i had to restart it said. it took me to console page instead of just normally restarting then after boot it just popped up saying something like 'cannot upgrade firmware, try again later or try using Kies'

Kies wont detect my phone. but my PC does no problem.

Any suggestions how to upgrade the phone to 4.3? or at least 4.2???

Im extremely new to all this root stuff and hardly understand it. so please simplify suggestions and give me step instructions!

Yes. Chances are your friend had a custom recovery on the phone.

Turn it off and press the power button and the home button.

See if it boots to "cwm" or "twrp" recovery.

If so you can easily flash a custom rom.

Please do me a huge favor and tell me your exact model number from the settings> more> about device menu so I can get you the right stuff and help pick a rom or restore to pure stock.

Just download the Rogers stock .zip then im assuming when i get to my console screen, 'install via .zip from sd card'?

Yup. Id suggest a factory reset/data wipe in CWM first. This will remove all youre apps but narrow down the chances of any bugs. Your pics, music etc will be safe if you do the reset in CWM and not in the phones settings.
First though. Do you really want to lose root? It can be very usefull.
You could flash official but rooted firmware if you can find it which will save a lot of headache in the future if you realise you want/need root access :thumbup:

yeah i agree with funky make a nandroid first and foremost. also you are better of in my opinion of keeping phone rooted you can use roms based off 4.3(jellybean) or 4.4(kitkat) instead of using official unrooted firmware which seems to give out so many problems

Actually we got it flashed and working perfectly via hangouts.

I skipped the nandroid since the phone was new and a revert to stock 4.1 wasn't really an option he seemed interested in.
Plus I have used that thread on numerous occasions to help people do I know it works.

nice he got problem fixed.
i have a bad habit of forgetting to nandroid when i initially root said device so many times...its a practice i wouldnt recommend to beginners but ive found that most times there is generally a odin stock firmware floating on xda and someone makes a stock rom and/or a cwm/twrp unroot/stock recovery floating around as well which is usually what i do then reroot then nandroid.thats just me though. anyways enough of my two cents lol

Yeah, its generally a good idea to nandroid but after five years of flashing and modding I've learned its not really necessary if you don't have data you're worried about losing and a solidly proven method to root or upgrade.
Its not the most responsible way to do things, skipping backup, but at 2am you tend to take out any steps that aren't 100% needed.

I agree. As long as you have one nandroid on the phone and one on the pc, that's really all you need. Unless you are an addict like me and can't remember how many you have and lose track lol
