I got an invite to Google voice and I don't have any SMS options listed on the home page. Under setting where you should be able to set voice mail/ sms mine just says voice mail widgets. Am I missing something? There isn't an SMS option above the in box button either. Although I don't expect it to be there until I can change the settings. This is the main reason I wanted Google voice.

did you sign up for a new number or just use your existing one? you only get sms options if you sign up for a new number i think.
I've got the new Google number. There's just absolutely no SMS references anywhere on the inbox page or anywhere in the settings. Under voicemail settings (which apparently should be voicemail/SMS) the only reference to SMS, is to send a text (SMS) to my main number for voicemail.

With the official GV app installed, when you compose a text you have a choice to send it via GV or message. You can select which one will be the default for future use. Also, when logged into your GV page on the web, look up in the upper left and you will see both a call and sms tab if you are wanting to text from there.

Log in from your computer, NOT your phone.

SETTINGS --> VOICEMAIL & SMS --> VOICEMAIL NOTIFICATIONS --> Send a text (SMS) message to:

You just have to look a little harder, and NO you don't have to use a google voice number to get this feature.

EDIT - if you want to SEND sms from your GV number, then you probably need to choose a GV number.

I fixed my problem so I thought I'd post it in case it came up for anyone else.

Got an invite and signed up for GV. They gave me a number and I logged into the inbox page. It turns out that even thought the Google number that I was given, was listed at the top page as my number, I was somehow given a crippled account (as in using your on cell number) with several features missing including no SMS.

Anyway, if it happens to anyone, or anyone just want to get a google number after using your own in Google voice you can get a different number by going to settings >phone> get Google number. You'll go through the number picking procedure and setup. I think you're only allowed to do this once without being charged.

My only gripe about GV on Android is that they limit you to 160 characters for messages. They did an update to GV for Blackberry and that allowed you to go up to 320 and it would just break up the message into two, but not for Android. However, I am liking the almost instantaneous push of the messages. On Blackberry, it only checked every 15 minutes, or as you manually refreshed.

Isn't texting intended to be short? How much more than 160 characters do you need for a text? If you need more then just use email.
