Don't shoot me if I ask how the Lumina 640 Windows fone is on this Android forum

If you were interested in jumping in to the Windows Phone ecosystem, it's worth it. Nothing spectacular or special about the phone as Bard pointed out, it's budget level. Is there something specific you wanted to know about the phone? I do not have it but I could run through a few sites to gather more specific info.

I ended up getting one, partly because the price was $39 and I thought it would be worth it to get the year free Skype credit $10/month and Office 365 that was offered.

Mostly I've got gripes about the phone, but with a couple of good points. I would advice against getting it. Here is why.

The phone feels nice, it doesn't look and feel like a $40 phone. The screen brightness and readability is better then the specs suggest, and the camera on automatic was taking nice pictures. The keyboard is responsive enough,

Gripe #1, It's been burning through stupid amounts of data. I'm usually always in wi-fi, so typically I don't have much of problem with a 2.5 Gig limit / month. This phone burned thru the limit in 6 days, and I haven't found a settings that says which app is the culprit.

Although I like the automatic photos from the camera, onec it froze until I rebooted the phone.

Worse is that trying to use two apps at once stinks. Its just slow to cut and paste from one app, and paste into a second app.

I very much miss the Google Apps, Chrome, Maps, Docs, etc. The MS version of maps isn't as good. ' Other apps either don't exist, or have lower standards for user interface. I rely on a bus prediction app, on the windows phone they lacked the equivalent features and had lesser interface. All too frequently, I am annoyed with the limitations of the phone.

Finally, while I bought it as a cheap way to get Skype and Office 365, so many reports are coming out that Windows 10 is a privacy nightmare, that I've begun to lean toward not putting windows 10 on any of my personal hardware.

Although Windows 10 is considered a "privacy nightmare" I feel like it is overblown. I am in no way defending windows nor upgrading to 10 so hear me out here. You pick what features you want turned on if you do not choose the express upgrade/installation. Feel free to turn some/all of them off there. You can also edit a registry file afterwards if you want more privacy. The amount of data that google and other apps have on Android users is ridiculous. Same goes for Apple and Amazon users. Microsoft is not the first company to do this, in fact they are about 8 years later than Google/Apple.

confed.. Great reply!

I hear you, and agree with you too. (uber too if your on that)

Still, I would say,
  1. If I was going to have 1, 2 ,3 companies know everything to what brand of underwear I use, I would choose the least offensive - one.
  2. If the choice was between Google and Microsoft, based on past business practices, I'd hold my nose, and choose Google.
  3. You are also correct, Google has been doing this for years. And I'm one of those caught, but its was incremental, and with repeated announced opportunities explaining how to opt of privacy losing options. It didn't feel that incremental was intentionally sneaky policy, but maybe it was.
