Been looking around for an answer so figure I would just ask. I had a widget but heard it drained the battery. Is there a way to put it in the notificAtion bar or what's the best option without draining the battery?

Use the market! Use Battery Indicator Pro free version.

Since I would prefer the practical answer, what does the Pro version add over the free version?

Why don't you download the app. It's .99 dude, and if you don't like it you can return it.

...Or just flash a custom theme, or just the battery theme. It'll be built into the system that way; thus no drainage.

Battery booster is the app your looking for. I have it and it works well with my evo. U can mess with the settings and view your batter status in the notification bar.
