bluetooth controller - root required?

Does anyone know if you need to root your phone in order to use a bluetooth controller? Mine is not rooted and I am curious if I can use any bluetooth controllers for the emulators I have on my phone.

Depends on the controller and the phone. For instance stuff like the Phonejoy doesn't require Root and works on many devices (for example all the higher end Samsung and HTC stuff), and WiiMotes will work with many stock devices like the Galaxy Nexus/Nexus S/most Android tablets without requiring Root. With Root you can use PS3 controllers via the app Sixaxis Controller from the Market.
