Here is a brief guide about how to amaze or amuse your friends by showing them that your phone is using a new Android build. You can choose your own name, mine is JAMDOUGHNUT.
Your phone needs to be rooted so that a system file can be edited.
With my phone the system file is called build.prop and is in the directory called system.
I used the app called Root Browser to copy the file to another folder as a precaution, even though the system should automatically make a copy of build.prop and name it build.prop.bak.
With Root Browser I opened build.prop by tapping on it, then tapping on edit.
I changed ro.build.display.id=GINGERBREAD.XWKS3
to
ro.build.display.id=JAMDOUGHNUT.XWKS3
Then I tapped on save. At that point the system automatically shutdown.
After restarting the phone and going to Settings, About phone, the Build number is shown as JAMDOUGHNUT.XWKS3
