Characters etc??

Hi all
So I'm not entirely sure if this is an app question or a Android question, so bear with me.
I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a character map thing for Android. You know like we have on computers. All those little symbols and stuff?
Has anyone ever seen anything like that? Is there an app,a keyboard,a setting or anything that makes characters possible on Android?
