Do updates cost money?

This is a stupid question but I can't find the answer anywhere..
When an application that you've paid for updates do you get charged for the update? I had one which I started to update and noticed 'authorizing credit card' so I killed the wifi.
Was it charging me again or just kind of authenticating my account or something?
