Why not just drag an drop images onto the sd card? That completely eliminates the chance of it getting compressed.

i WANT my images to be compressed or optimized for the phone. there's no sense in having my 5 megapixel photos on my phone taking up unnecessary space. i belive zune does this for it's devices.

Then just resize them to 800x480.

are you going to put all 32,000 pics on your phone?

You can use a program like picasa to batch convert pics.

s_special, I'm curious... what did you end up doing? I will be facing a similar problem soon.

Rather than batch convert before I drag and drop photos to my device's microSD card, I'd rather have a desktop program or Android app compress them automatically. (I'm even considering a web based sync type deal if such a thing can be done.)
