As the title specifies, I'm finally just doing it. I am so fed up with Sprint right now that I am quite close to telling them to shove their contract. I have been with sprint for years and have been a loyal customer, yet when I need service I get jack. Just a little rant :D

ANYWHO, I called HTC yesterday, told them I would like to send my device into them for repair. The dust has progressively gotten worse to the point it effects the phones visibility in direct sunlight (that was for all you who would like to quarrel about my pickyness) Anywho, I was sent an address and a claim number. The post office I don't believe is open tomorrow, so I will be boxing up my Hero and sending it off to HTC first thing Monday morning. They claim I should have the phone back in about 2.5 weeks. Sadly I am responsible for shipping + insurance which I feel is needed..

I will update on the status of this, as I tried to get some answers regarding others who have sent theirs in with no avail. HTC told me that they will basically replace everything on the phone. They take it apart, replace the front plastic around the edges, or whatever material that is, replace the seals, and replace the screen (not the actual LCD obviously) and that this should prevent the problem from coming back. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Wish me luck! haha

If this doesn't solve the problem, I'm calling em right back up suggesting a refund. This is way too much work for a cell phone. I haven't held a specific Hero in my hand for more than 2 weeks.

"I haven't held a specific Hero in my hand for more than 2 weeks."

What do you mean by that exactly?

I mean that the device becomes unusable/defective before I have the phone for over 2 weeks. Either the device is buggy (restarting, network issues, ie broken) or I have dust to the point I can't use my phone in the sun. No I don't install that many 3rd party apps (if you want to suggest that as my problem for some of the issues). By the time I get everything set up on my phone.. sync integration, emails, customizations, apps.. the phone has to be exchanged for one of the following issues.

Honestly, If I had that many problems I would have ditched my Hero a long time ago. Sorry for your luck.

Good luck! let me know how it goes, i was thinking about sending mine in to get the dust issue fixed too, as I have trouble reading parts of the screen in direct sunlight too.

I sure will. I figure if anyone is gonna be able to fix the issue for good its sure as hell not gonna be Sprint. Best bet is for sure HTC.

I'm fairly happy with my Hero (sine Nov), but the dust issue is immensely irritating. I have an iPod touch. It's in an Incase protective cover, with no screen protection. I carry it around like that constantly, and all it ever needs is a quick wipe down.

My Hero is completely babied. I carry it around in a friggin microfiber bag (from Sunglass Hut), and every night and morning, it gets "Dust-Off"-ed. And still, it has a bunch of dust under the screen. I find I'm being so protective of this stupid thing that it's hindering my enjoyment of it. Not to even mention the fact that it doesn't seem to be working anyway  .

To be honest, I don't have much to complain about Sprint or HTC. Sprint's plans are deliciously reasonable, and HTC makes some of the hottest hardware around. But the the fact that they have allowed so many units to ship with this glaring defect - and then refuse to properly address it - is a total embarrassment.

I could not agree with you more. I carry my phone around in my hand when I can, and refuse to put it in my pocket unless I absolutely have too. I will agree the phone is great, I love it. But as you said, spending so much time trying to prevent these defects is not enjoyable at all. A cell phone is something I should be able to just slip in my pocket. And although I am a huge fan of cases/ screen protectors for protection, I should not HAVE to use these things in hopes of protecting my phone from things I cannot control.

As you said I have an ipod touch as well. I would feel comfortable putting the thing in a vacuum bag and shaking it up. I have never once thought "if I put it here, will it accumulate dust". Its unfortunate this is my constant train of thought with the HERO.\

Like I said though, HTC claims that there is a fix for this issue. The rep I spoke with when setting up my order told me he has never heard anyone call back with the same issue after sending it in. (and the Sprint call centers not that big, I got the same person the 3 times I called) So either it was fixed, or they were just so irritated they dropped the phone entirely.

Yeah, it seems like some people have good luck, others don't (aka dreamliner). There's a big poll thread about it somewhere around here.

From my recent experience, if you bitch enough, you can just get a new one from Sprint. Refurb or not, that's what your phone will become after you send it to HTC. I would rather get one from Sprint than be without my phone for 2-3 weeks. As far as I know, I'll be given a new one but not going to hold my breath.... :). Plus, I have a phone that I can take apart and learn from so if my new one still has dust, I'll have practice cleaning it.

Trust me, im tired of bitching. I have tried my luck with multiple sprint employees. None of which would budge. And I didn't give up very easily haha

Haha, you have to persist! They tried offering me a $20 inconvenience credit. But I've got a new phone coming tomorrow or Tuesday.

Haha, well at least I know it will be fixed this way too. The rep at HTC said refurbs rarely have the issue, party because they were potentially sent in for this reason. So instead of getting a refurb someone else owned, I'll be getting my 2 week old hero back. So in that respect, I'm happy. Plus I have a blackberry thats just been waiting for me to reactive it :D

Hopefully it understands its only temporary..

The build quality of HTC devices are terrible. Virtually EVERY Hero has a dead pixel or two (go to a black screen, count the green dots)...or dust under the screen. Shoot, even the Nexus one has build quality issues. I'd be more than happy to pay an additional $50 for a phone that had better build quality.

Dead pixels I actually do not have. Another reason I will be keeping my specific device. Other than the dust on this one, the device is solid.

I've heard that a lot of the pixel problems come from "stuck" rather than dead pixels. If you don't already know about it, there's actually a pixelfixer app that has about a 40/60 success/failure rate on getting pixels unstuck.

Of course, I agree, it shouldn't be an issue in the first place. Just throwing that out there for anyone

Alright for anyone that is interested, shipped out my Hero this morning. Should arrive at HTC by Wednesday. They claim someone will call when it arrives. I'll keep updating once I hear more.
