Apps file access

I'm trying to write an app which is strongly based on somebody else's code (which is in C). This code needs to open two files in order to run. I've put these files in the jni folder, with the native code, but I can't get the code to open them successfully. I suspect that the problem is that I have been unsuccessful at guessing how to write even such a simple relative file path for Android, but I haven't been able to find anything at all about file paths in any resource.
