Apps Final paper at the university, android app

For the client (the app), you could just use the DefaultHttpClient APIs to execute a POST/PUT or GET to the server, which would then interperate the data that was sent up and respond appropriately.

For the server, you could do a myriad of things, but if it were me, I'd look into using Google App Engine with either Python or Java (whichever you are more comfortable with) to create some web services that your client application would call.

Also, since this is an academic endeavor, I'd suggest keeping your web services as RESTful as possible.
