gmail chat -or- text messaging

I have an Android Hero phone. My primary email account is with gmail.

Lately, I've noticed that when people try to chat with me within gmail, some of those comments come to my phone as a text message. At first I thought that was pretty cool but now it is a bit confusing because its not clear whether we are chatting via gmail or whether we a text messaging. Sometimes, when I'm sitting at my computer I'm not sure which medium we are using.

Also, it does not always do this. It just started a few weeks ago. I'm a bit confused. It never did this before. I'm not sure whether I like it or hate it. But, clearly, I don't understand it.

What's going on?

It is not a text message. It is the "talk" app. it is the same as the google chat program within gmail. They aren't text messages. It must be one of your contacts initiating a conversation...
