    Hi all,
I just spent hours reading about how to root. I think I am more lost now. I know there is no chance I will be able to do this. I have tried to understand all this but I can't. I have learned how to double my batter life from reading other posts but this is way over my head. I am new at all this so please dont; bash me if I am asking a dumb question or doing something wrong by asking this. Is there anyone in the Los Angeles area that would be willing to teach me in person for a fee or be willing to do it for me. I would be forever gratefull. If you teach me I can teach the next person who asks. Thank you in advance for any help.

you should just use unrevoked. you can't mess that up. download it, make sure your debugger is on in the phone (located under settings/application/development) unrevoked will do the rest.

you can also check out youtube guys on there have vids of doing unreovked from A-Z so if reading is confusing you, hopefully watching it will help you.

Yeah, I rooted the old fashion way, which was definitely a pain in the ass the first time, but unrevoked makes things soooooooo much simpler now as I rooted 2 of my friends phone like this.

Here is what you need to do:
-Download the drivers in the first bullet to your desktop. Then unzip it to your desktop:
    public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki]

-Then download unrevoked for your OS:
    http://unrevoked.com/recovery/

-Go into your control panel and click on system and in one of the tabs you will see device manager. Go into it. You will see your android device with a mark on it. Right click on it and choose to update the drivers. If right click doesn't work then double click on it or something like that which will give you the option to install the driver
Then choose the location where you want it to search, it will be the folder that you unzipped the drivers to. It will then install

-If you have HTC sync installed then ctrl/alt/del to your task manager. In running processes, end the one that starts with HTC and there will be no need to uninstall the program. If you do not have HTC sync installed, then just skip this step.

-Now make sure your device is in charge made and hooked up to your computer. Also debug is on. Settings/apps/developments.

-Now just run the unrevoked executable that you have on your desktop and follow the instructions on the screen. Basically it will tell you when to scroll to something that says hboot usb and you will need to do that and click the power button. That is all you will be asked to do in that whole process......

You device will reboot a couple of times and ask you to do the same thing with hboot. You will then see it say done on the screen. You are now ready to flash custom Roms!

Good luck and hope this helps you or anyone else that might need it......

OK Eric you make it sound really easy. I still have a couple questions. I'm not good with computer terms. does this mean "You are now ready to flash custom Roms" install aps? also is there anyway to bring it back to sprints setting Incas i need to bring it in? or am i stack making an insurance claim? Also the apps i am putting back into it are those just the same ones u get in the android marketplace? thank u so much for taking Ur time-D

also do download apps to m y CPU, the phone, or on the sd card?

oh ya my home pc is a few years old and is on windows xp. my laptop is newer and faster w/windows 7 do u suggest using one or the other?

Whichever one you are more comfortable with as far as OS's are concerned. I am personally used to XP and that is what I have used.

A custom Rom is when a developer takes the system and makes tweaks to it by adding and removing unwanted things for better performance.

I would say root your phone first and then we can discuss getting a custom Rom on there which is really simple to do......Your phone will still work like normal after you root so it is not like you need to flash a new Rom right away. There is just a lot better things out there by doing it.

If you did not do the last update that came out a week or so ago you can unroot your phone and bring it back to sprint like it was never touched. With the latest update I am not sure if the unroot works yet, but it very well might. Maybe someone else knows. If you didn't do the recent update, then don't worry about, you are good to go.

A rom and app is not the same. A rom is basically the OS. YOur apps are what you get in the market just to clarify........

If you want to be prepared to install a Rom when you are ready, this is my recommendation as far as the most stable & best looking rom out there by Myn. Great for someone who just wants everything to work without tweaking anything. Download the zip file and place it on your SD card. Make sure the zip is not in any folder, just in the main directory of your SD and leave it zipped. After you are rooted, me or someone else can explain how to install that zip file which is the custom Rom. Once you load it, you will see the difference immediately between a stock sprint Rom and a custom one. The look and feel is sooooo much better!

Here is the thread if you want to read about the Rom and it's feature's. Also might give you a better understanding of what a custom Rom is....

So I have searched and searched and even did some more searching to no avail... with that said does anyone know if the latest ota 3.29 can be unrooted??? And if so is it the same unroot process as 3.26????

I was previously rooted with ur3.21 but had to unroot to take the phone into sprint and they did the ota while it was there..

I am eagerly waiting to re-root but I want to make sure I can un-root.

I'm about to root and i'm as confused as the OP. However, it sounds to me like all I have to do is go to unrevoked and download it and basically it's as easy as clicking "okay".

Is this correct? I would like the simplest way to root.

Do I need to install the hboot usb drivers? If so, why? I had my evo hooked up and started the unrevoked reflash_package.exe and it recognized my phone instantly. Do I still need to use the modified drivers?

Go for it, you will be fine! It is pretty fail safe.

If you get stuck, which I am sure you won't, just post up here and we will help you get through. I am sure you will be fine though.......

I will even give you the next steps on getting your Rom Flashed.

-As I said, make sure to download that zip file from my previous post to your sd card

-After your phone is rooted, power it down by holding the power button to shut it down.

-Then hold volume down and while holding it push down on the power button, then let it go but keep holding volume down.

-A white screen will come up. Use the volume switch to select recovery and hit the power button which acts like enter on the keyboard. It will then boot to recovery.

    -do a system wipe

-then goto wipe cache and do that twice, then goto the advanced menu and wipe dalvik twice.

-then go back to the option that says install zip from sd or something like that. It will then let you choose a file. Choose the file that you put on there.

-it will take a few minutes to install. when it is done use the option to reboot your phone. You now have a custom rom installed!

Just remember, you will lose all of your programs that you installed and will need to reinstall. Check out appbrain in the market as well as on your computer before doing this. it will show you everything you have installed and make it easy to reinstall after, unless you do not have a lot of apps to reinstall. Also, you contacts should be backed up w/ google so that should come back automatically......

    Okay, I think I covered it all....lol

    "do a system wipe"

Don't mean to hijack the thread but sure don't want to start a new one when the topic is right here.

I rooted last night. I will have time to try roms tomorrow. When i do a system wipe, will I lose all my settings? There are probably a dozen things I have tweaked to get good battery life, will I need to do all of that again every time I try a roms? Will I still have bookmarks, text messages, etc?

I am currently stuck on the white HTC evo screen when I try to do my nandroid, so I know I need to disc that and figure out etc wtf is going on with that before proceeding, but I didn't have time too research many threads today, I'll be doing that 1St thing in the morning.
