Use acalendar+. It's a lot better than the stock calendar app.

Use Lightning Launcher Extreme as your launcher. It is extremely customisable (far more than launchers like Apex and Nova) and there are some cool themes out there. Have a look here werksmannschaft.de | android stuff for some good examples.

I know you said without rooting your phone (although you didn't explain why), but a unrooted phone is completely hamstrung so that would be easily the best thing you could do.

I've used go launcher before it was nice but always seemed to be lagy I'm using nova right now and I'm liking it with nox Icon pack
