Anyone Receive a 12.8MB OTA Update Today?

I am sure I could handle rooting. But I don't know that i would use the additional functionality. I sure everybody that's rooted can't live without being rooted. However, I don't know what I am missing ha.

It's so much about choices, some people (like me) can't stand Sense, so having a nice rom like ELB or WW that has no Sense in them whatsoever is a nice thing. There are roms for people that like Sense, but remove a lot of the crap on them.

Then you add in overclocking, apps that provide better memory management, live wallpapers, apps2sd, JIT, wifi tethering, and stuff like metamorph to provide more customization.

I had no clue how to root a phone, thankfully people in the irc channel walked me through it, once you get that part done its smooth sailing.

all i want from root is your second paragraph. those are things that optimize the phone and not an "eol'd" phone for a longer time

rooting can install apps on the sd card too right?

Yep, with apps2sd (a2sd). Most (but not all) ROMs support this (and/or you can install separately). You might not need it though since most custom ROMs give you lots of free space from the get-go (140MB or more). If you've got a lot of very large apps, then yes, a2sd would be the way to go.

Then you're doing the smart thing by not gaining root access to your device.

We're seeing more and more rather regretful posts around the forums these days coming from users who either didn't do their homework regarding rooting or who did but found themselves dismayed by the process and/or the results.

WHAT!!!

People are regretting that they rooted their phone? That is like regretting looking down a hot womans shirt when she bends over.

...and wait until the 2.1 leak masses try to use the 2.1 leak root method (unless they trim that down a whole lot more)...wow!

+1 / lol (but don't tell my wife I said that :D)

If someone's going to run this update, please do a logcat on it. Here's a snip form jcase on how to do it. (regarding the 2.1 OTA but it still applies here) I'm sure developers would like to get their hands on the ZIP so they can apply any fixes included in this update to our favorite rooted roms.

If you are a leaker, please follow this tutorial when updating to the OTA. Get us the url to the OTA zip please.

If you are interested in looking at the process that HTC/Verizon uses for the OTA updates, you can get the URL for the OTA zip the following way:

Run logcat on the pc and accept the update on the phone

$ adb logcat > logcat_accept.txt

This will sit like this (it continues to log output into the output file) until the phone reboots. At that point, the adb logcat job will terminate, and the name of the zip file will be indicated in the logfile in a message similar to:

W/SystemUpdateHelper( 64): !!! REBOOTING TO INSTALL /cache/desirec-ota-104882.7b1e5cca.zip !!!

Then, take the name of the file and paste it on the end of android.clients.google.com/updates/partner, for instance, for the Eris 1.17.605.1 OTA, the complete url is:

https://android.clients.google.com/updates/partner/desirec-ota-104882.7b1e5cca.zip

Ok, because I remember that we were supposed to get the 2.1 OTA also, and we all know how THAT turned out.

I think in this case; however, the 2.1v3 leak is identical to the 2.1 official OTA with the exception of the bootloader which shouldn't matter.

*EDIT* Shouldn't matter for an OTA update. Matters for other things like root, etc.

Read the posts by thenestor (near the bottom), I think this will answer your questions:

http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/92096-verizons-ruu-official-2-1-droid-eris.html

thensetor "As expected, the ROM within the RUU is completely identical to "leak v3."

So thats good news for my RUU. I wonder if people on Leak v.2 and under will get this OTA. I dont remember the differences, but I am going to assume that ANY version of the Leak or people using RUU w2ill get the OTA.
