Help HTC Evo 4G Insurance - RadioShack vs. Sprint

When I got my Evo from RadioShack they tried to sell me every crappy thing they could. Including the $100/2 year insurance plan.

I did my research before getting my Evo so I knew all about it.

The RadioShack insuarance barely covers anything, the RS guys were even trying to sell it by saying it's worth it just by getting 2 free batteries over 2 years (although if I get a battery a year from now, and another one a year from that, that will be when my contract is up, and so the 2nd battery is a moot point and I will be getting my HTC Evo2 5G at that point - hopefully). Besides, the batteries a cheaper online than they are from RadioShack - $32.95 on Amazon - although I've already seen the price change twice before even getting them in stock, so who knows how much they will be once they show up in Amazon's warehouse.

The RadioShack insurance does NOT cover water damage, and I believe it also does not cover Loss, Theft or Accidental Damage.

However the Sprint $7/mo plan DOES cover all of that. I never have to worry about trashing my Evo.

The really funny part is that when I was at RadioShack, I asked what the difference was between the RadioShack insurance and the Sprint $7/mo insurance, and the guy said "We are not even supposed to talk about the Sprint coverage". Luckily, Sprint called me the next day just to go over my account, and offered me the $7 insurance at that time.

I was worried for a day that because I got it at RadioShack I wouldn't be eligible for the Sprint coverage, but that was not a problem.

As an AT&T user who dropped them for the Evo on Sprint, I am EXTREMELY satisfied (with the exception of Activation woes - which is irrelevant to me - 1 day of issues compared with 730 days of use before my contract is up is a non-issue to me).

Don't forget that there is a deductible ($100 or $150 ? ) that you have to cover if you use Sprint's insurance. Also, when I used it once before I lost my upgrade ability and they considered my replacement an upgrade.

Best Buy charges me $9.90 per month and they cover everything except loss or theft. They even cover water damage which I believe Sprint does NOT.

Sounds like they are just trying to make a sale. I've noticed when it comes to people who make bonuses off of sales they try to do everything possible exept inform the customer. I've been in retail for about ten years and its alot better to give the customer the full scoop. I hate when someone comes back in if I've informed them wrong but I would agree radioshacks insurance is nothing compared to sprints. It comes in handy for prepaid phones that are cheap as it is but not for the real thing.

I agree with you. The insurance premium maybe low ($7/mo) but the deductible will kill you eventually.

Let me just share something, I purchased my insurance at Ensquared, they offer Accidental damage coverage plus Lost and Stolen coverage for as little as $8.75 a month with deductibles ranging from $35 to $75. You can also purchase a 1yr or a 2 yr insurance with the same coverage.

Sprint does cover water damage.

Water damage is usually covered for any damage insurance. Otherwise, just throw the phone up in the air, let it land, and break. Now make the claim...there will be even more to fix now.

I work retail too, for almost a year now, we sell services to customers with new computers, antivirus and optimization and whatnot, as well as the protection racket, drops, screen crackage, battery replacement, etc etc. I don't sell the plans to my customers because if the people fixing it break it, they don't have to fix THEIR break. Totally weaselly.

I have ERP only on my EVO ($4/month). Sprint's $7 TEP is ESRP ($3) + ERP ($4).

ESRP covers: Mechanical or electrical failure, routine maintenance, and failure from normal wear and tear.
ERP covers: Loss, theft, physical or liquid damage and resulting corrosion, and fire or lightning damage

IMO, no point paying for ESRP since within the first year those problems are covered under the manufacturer warranty. In the second year, may be covered by your credit card (extending warranty), or pay the $100 deductible anyway. Of course since most of us are premier you cculd always just upgrade at that point.
