Advice from an EVO User

This is not a thread to start a fight or anything, not here to say one phone is better than the other. I figure most of you don't actually have the phone yet, it might be useful if I shared a little of my experience with the other huge phone (size wise) on the market.

First off, the EVO fits comfortably in my pocket, no problems there. I wear normal jeans (or slacks to work) so I imagine the Droid X shouldn't cause a problem (I believe the X is slightly taller, and the Evo is a tad wider, not sure). One thing to bear in mind is that you may want to keep the phone in the pocket by itself. There has been a time when my phone fell sideways in my pocket, and it took a little manuevering to get it out. Nothing crazy, but if its sideways in my pocket, and something else is in my pocket too, it took a little longer to finagle the phone out than when it was sideways in my pocket alone. Overall though, I can't say the size of the Evo caused any real problems.

I'm not a big fan of cases, but I did get one for the Evo, only because the lens protrudes a little. The case is just thick enough to where if I lay the phone flat on its back, the lens doesn't touch the table. I know the back of the X is different, and unique in its own way, so this may not apply. However, if you are worried about adding bulk to an already large phone, I would say its okay. I've had the case on since the beginning, and as I said above, I don't think the size is a problem.

Last thing about the size. While sometimes I need to adjust the way I hold the phone, I can reach all the buttons fine. With other phones, I was more inclined to hold the phone closer to the bottom, but with the Evo, I hold it closer to the top or center. After a few days, it sort of felt natural, not as though I had to actually think about the best way to hold the phone. As for may hands, I'd say they aren't real big. I can palm a basketball, but only for about half a second. Obviously tiny hands and phones like this won't mix well, but I don't think you need banana fingers to work the phone.

With different manufacturers, different skins, and different carriers, I suppose size is the only real comparison to make between these phones. And unless you're coming from an HD2, or an Evo, its unlikely you have used a phone of this size, so hopefully this helped you a little bit.

Been lurking on these forums ever since i got lucky and purchased my Incredible. I think I'll use this as my first post here and say .....Thanks for a classy and informative post here! That's pretty rare on these boards if you own a different phone than the other. I returned my Dinc exactly one week ago and i'm impatiently waiting the arrival of my Droid X from BB. Cant wait and thans again for this bit of info on size. I for one don't see the size becoming a problem. That's a huge reason why I decided to go for the X. I hate that it doesn't have HTC Sense but i'm sure i will be able to get over that quick enough. (Maybe.....)

Oh, and I'd like to add that if the EVO was on the Big Red Network, i'd most likely be all over it. Love the look and feel of it, but then again, I haven't had my hands on the Droid X quite yet.

That was a nice post.

It's a shame there is so much externally wasted space on the X. Obviously it could be necessary inside, but couldn't the bezel above and below the screen, as well as the space below the buttons be smaller. They could put the branding on the top or bottom and maybe make the phone even shorter than the EVO.

I can say the HD2 does fit nicely in a pocket as well and it is virtually an EVO.

I'm returning my Evo for an X. At first I thought the Evo was huge but I quickly became accustomed to the size. I'm really happy with the 4.3" screen.

FYI though, the Droid X is slightly longer, but is considerably thinner than the EVO. Multiple reviewers have stated that it feels smaller and is easier to "maneuver" than the EVO. Dimensions being different, the same rules may not apply

That was part of my concern, that fact that the online time the size of the Evo becomes a (albeit, very slight) burden is when it lays horizontally in my pocket. The fact that the X is slightly taller I thought perhaps if it lays horizontal may be a slightly bigger issue. But I'm sure the difference is slight enough that it won't matter.

I don't think I could go for the Dell Streak though, that may be too much.

As far as people who just want to say their phone is better no matter what, I don't subscribe to that train of thought. I want phones released after mine to blow mine out of the water. Its the only way to make sure phones advance. Granted, it'd be nice if I had 6 months before I felt like my phone was left behind, but I don't want phone makers to release a phone and say, "That's it, we're done." Unless somebody releases a phone that genuinely CANNOT get any better, I want Motorola, HTC, and others to keep trying to top each other. Look at the iPhone, it took serious competition from Android just for them to get FOLDERS.

Another note, not sure how relevant, as far as getting used to the size, it took much less time for the Evo too feel natural then when I jumped from a flip phone to my first Smartphone, which was a MotoQ (please don't judge me). Granted that change probably was bigger (size-wise) than going from a Blackberry Curve to an Evo, but the MotoQ probably took a month or so to get used to the feel, while the Evo took only a few days.

i was a former EVO owner and i agree with the OP.

Coming from a Sprint hero, the phone is really big but in less than ten minutes I was in awe of it...the size shouldn't be awkward or uncomfortable for you.

I think in the pictures of the X(and the Evo/Hd2) they make the phones look really huge. Even in the videos it looks huge.

But in reality when you get it, it really isn't as big as you think(and that's a good thing)
I mean 4.3 inches sounds like a big deal but at the same time...Most phones are usually 3.2-3.7 which means it is only 0.6-1.1 inches wider than phones like the iphone, droid, incredible, heroes, storms etc.

It is funny reading post when people say it is too big or whatever(to each their own)

That being said, if you ever went from an X(or an Evo) you will quickly see how awkward it is to hold a small phone like an eris/hero or whatever

I agree i get to play with the EVO from time to time and when i go back to my HTC Hero its not the same,i think the EVO is a good size,fit and feel as for the Droid X being almost the same size it should do good.
