Root How do I do a Nandroid Backup (Telus Milestone)

Make sure you have ADB installed :)

-Connect your device to your PC and Power off your phone
-Hold the CAMERA button and then press the POWER button and HOLD them both until you see the recovery screen.
-Once you see the recovery screen press the VOLUME UP button and the CAMERA button at the SAME TIME until you see a menu.

On you pc now type

ADB Shell
su
nandroid-mobile.sh --backup
name it something easy i used telus-backup
let it run its course.
press reboot phone now

There is another way too:

Download Open Recovery. Unzip the file and place it in the root of your SD card. In it is a file called update.zip

This a patched update.zip that adds additional menu options including nandroid backup, applying themes etc

To access it restart the phone and press the camera button and power. Release the power but hold the camera button to boot into recovery mode.

Then apply the update.zip to access the new menu. Works awesome.

I do believe the phone needs to be rooted though to use this method.

I'm sorry. newbie here. But what's the purpose of a nandroid backup?

Nandroid backup does just that: backup your phone. It will have any firmware, settings, downloading apps, etc and create a backup image of it. It's good to do this when you know your phone is working right.
This way if you screw anything up, you can revert back to the backup image and start again.
