First of all, it all depends on what Cell phone company your contracted with. If you have Verizon get the Droid, Droid X, or the Droid Incredible. If your with Sprint get the EVO 4G or the New Samsung Galaxy that has 4G. Tmobile then get the Nexus one. If your with ATT well then your screwed.

Did you read the first post? They don't want a large phone, won't pay for a good phone and are in the UK, none of the phones you mentioned are options. :D

If you like iPhone size, Acer Liquid is worth a look. Like a budget Desire :).

It comes with Donut out of the box but official Eclair update is available on Acer website. It has a Snapdragon processor though slightly underclocked to 768MHz, it has 256MB RAM and 512MB ROM (plus 2GB SDCard included). It also has the 800x480 WVGA resolution (and it does look great on a 3.5" screen).

There is a Liquid E version which comes with Eclair out of the box and 512MB RAM.

If you are interested in rooting the device, the development community on MoDaCo is very large. There is a FroYo port being worked on and almost complete (proximity sensor and videorecording not working, Bluetooth kinda buggy, built in tethering not working. But everything else working great and it is a very usable every day ROM).

There are also several great Eclair ROMs available in which everything works (even a couple which include Dolby Mobile).

Looks decent. Also another thing I regret about my htc desire is the fact that I never rooted it! At the time I had my desire, I didnt see any benefit in it. Boy was I wrong!! I assume any android can be rooted???

Pretty much, but when phones are new, they take a short time for the rooting exploit for that model to be found.

Here's the latest we have on rooting the Desire S -

Hope that helps!

I'm an HTC fan myself and the Desire series is a great phone, as you've discovered. If you have friends looking for a lower-priced alternative, root-ready-to-go, maybe this is worth a look, thought I'd mention it:
