Former Evo users that bought Epic?

yeah man. it was one of the first things i noticed and was extremely happy about when going to 2.2.

Crazy. I must've been somewhat lucky. The major issues that a lot of peeps had, I didn't really have (except for the software update that bricked the phone). The other issues I had were unlike anybody elses.

Never had bad build (w/ screen lift), never had an EVO with light leak, and only bug with 2.2 update is with the camera (just too lazy to hard reset and reconfigure...LOL).

Nontheless, overall the Epic looks like a very, very good phone and lived up to what I thought. Overall, I think Sprint has the 2 best phones on the market with the EVO and the Epic, so maybe that's a good thing looking forward for Sprint! I just hope the next generation of these two phones don't take steps backwards.

Everyone praises HTC like they're the best thing since sliced bread when it's actually quite the opposite. HTC has notoriously bad quality control issues, screen separation, cheap usb ports that fall off within a week and even intentional bugs that cripple your phone, you can keep Sense no thanks, lots of free alternatives that do the same thing for free in the Market.

I couldn't agree more! Most of the posters in this thread are EVO fanboys that can't admit that their phone is already irrelevant. The EPIC is far superior to the EVO in almost every way. Go back to your EVO forum and take your playa-hatin attitudes with you.

Kinda like in the n1 thread how they all think the n1 is just as good when the sgs beats it in just about every spec.

Is that photoshop or did you get the HTC clock widget from an app somewhere?

That was taken with an app called ShootIt, it usually requires root but for some reason it doesn't on the Epic. Widget is called Fancy Widget, Google it it's free but no longer available on the Market thanks to HTC crying foul.

EDIT: Here is some info on the snapshot app

I'm in the exact same situation and feel the exact same way. The EVO suites me better and the Epic suites my wife better. But they are both fantastic. I think the EVO is more user friendly and oriented but the Epic has better specs. Fortunately I get to play with both.

Well I wasted a whole day playing with my wife's new Epic. I picked it up while she was at work. I gotta tell you, the screen is amazing(for games). Played the Asphalt demo and to be honest, there is no comparison, it smokes the Evo for game play. Now with that out of the way, here is my opinion of the two phones. Game play and screen are the ONLY on ups the Epic has on the Evo; at least right now. Now mind you I have a rooted phone with a custom ROM so I'm running 56 fps, no overclock. The capacitive buttons on the bottom are not responsive at all on the Epic. You have to push them like three or four times to get a response. Then the light goes out and you have to poke around to see where they are. The should be painted on or something. If you are into widgets, you better get ready to pay for them because they are few and sparse on this phone (already shelled out for Beautiful Widgets) because there is no replacement except one stock round clock which had the wrong time. As far as speed, well again there is no comparison IMHO. With my custom Kernel the Evo wins hands down and that is no exaggeration. But lets wait and see what the guys over at XDA come up with. Maybe someone can find a use for the slider keyboard, I don't like it and it's always moving about in your hand. The phone (Epic) has Swype and a pretty decent Froyo like keyboard. I would probably never use the physical keyboard but thats just me.

But we are Android friends here and I am not here to slam one Android for another. However being a launch day Evo owner with absolutely no problems from my device, I wouldn't trade for the Epic for anything. The programs on the Epic do a lot intuitive things like having a built in task manager/killer. But for the most part, the Evo does them faster and smoother. The Epic giving the option of pre-defined replies for phone calls is nice (that's pretty cool gotta find a way to do that). Audio/Video out to three way RCA video is a killer feature that lets you see whats on your screen. Frankly would have rather had that than HDMI out on my Evo. All in all the Epic is a pretty solid offering. However, coming from the Evo, I am quite happy where I am and what I use it for. The Evo is just a killer phone. Form is a little difficult for the Epic cause it's going to be hard to find a case thats not like an Oderbox sp? or something. But closed not much difference.

Bottom line, it's 4 o'clock in the morning now I couldn't get close to that phone if I wanted to. She really likes it and I'm sure the new Epic owners will fall in love with their Android handset as well. But as the tread asked, as an Evo owner, in my heart and mind, I'd choose the Evo any day. But some good 'ole sibling rivalry is good right?

BTW, the Epic camera is pretty fast and takes pretty good shots as well. Just have to figure out how to use the front facing one as soon as she goes to sleep. ;-)

The one plus about the evo's screen is that it does go really bright. On auto brightness about halfway, the screen is actually brighter than the Epic's screen on full bright. Of course the Epic's screen is better, but it's much harder to tell in indoor lighting. Outdoors (but not direct sunlight) is where I really saw the difference.

I took some pictures of this with another EVO at the store. But the EVO's screen makes up for colors (or lack thereof) with brightness.

Site won't let me upload attachment of 1mb? Oh well.

AAAAAAAARG. Of course you took a picture of the freakin browser. The Epic's browser has it's OWN brightness setting that must be tweaked individually. Menu -> more -> brightness setting. You'll notice it's WAY down. The reason for this is because SAMOLED screens use more battery when displaying white pixels. The Epic has the brightness turned down on the browser by default to save battery life.

The Epic's screen gets JUST as bright a the EVO's. Please take a picture of another app at full brightness.

I have both phones....currently comparing before passing one to my son.

Both are great phones...the EPIC is faster, the screen is slightly more touch responsive and the the display itself is amazing. I also get 30-40% better battery life with EPIC.

I'm not crazy about Sense and I'm so use to swype...I don't need a hard keyboard, although the EPIC keyboard is the best slide out I've seen.

The EVO feels more solid to me and I carry it in my back pocket with only a skinomei invisible shield. I would not feel secure carrying the EPIC like that.

I will prolly stick with the EVO, but I do wish it had better battery life. I do hope Froyo will be released to the EPIC soon so I can make comparisons with same OS.

My opinion is that you cant lose with either one! :D

I miss the .3", Sense, and kickstand.

The major thing I like better about the Evo is their email program. First, it was much easier setting up my work exchange email on Evo. Actually I still can't get it to work on my Epic. And second, I miss Evo's ability to check email every hour from 7am - 3:30pm (my work hours), and then every 2-3 hours after those hours. Epic I can only set it at one time at all times, and the max is just one hour.

With CM6 do you lose 4G?

It's still worth it 100%. I am going to post some screens with my evo looking like the epic in a couple of minutes.

Like the look and the colors make the Evo's screen pop. Everything is themed including gmail, youtube, messages......

You know, I asked myself last while I was playing with the phones why it is that the brightness on the two seemed much closer on anything but the browser. I did not know there was a separate brightness. The EVO still goes a tad brighter and colors on the EPIC bleed a little at full brightness. I will take more pictures when my wife gets home. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm not herer to bash the epic in any way but I think I found new life in my Evo. I finally rooted and loaded CM6 and I have to say it brought new life in the phone. The fps fix inlcluded and now I see less and less differences except for the screen of course.

Did you root to Froyo from CM6, or from to CM6 from Froyo? In other words did you get the OTA .6 update and then root it? If that can be done, I may be interested.

But I will do it when he fixes 4g.

don't forget weight. Epic is lighter. Also feels better in my hand than the Evo does. Wish there was a little more metal on the Epic. I can do without the cartoonish background on things (icons in the status bar for instance). Cheapens the OS a bit. I miss the better email handling of Sense. Didn't feel the need to download the SMS alternatives with Sense, but am now using Handcent. I just hate white text on black backgrounds and don't understand why stock doesn't let you switch it up. It's ridiculous. Same with email. Stock android blows in that respect. I shouldn't have to download alternative programs for simple things like that.

LauncherPro is definitely smoother and more responsive on the Epic. Quite a few things seem snappier and smoother but not by a wide margin. Just enough to notice having both phones. I like the dialer much better on the Epic. Also like that nice dismiss with a text message front and center on the screen when a call comes in. I kept trying to tap it wondering why nothing was happening before I realized I had to drag the person's icon there...duh.

.3" is a difference, but .4" is an even bigger difference on the upside and I'm digging the pop of the screen. Whites look pretty white too compared to the Moment.

Not a fan of the microUSB on top, especially while charging in the car. Have to find the rear angled microUSB cable or at least a right angled one which I've seen, and still might have. My Sprint charger didn't like it. any pressure on the cable stopped the charging and actually hastened the discharge going from full to empty in less than an hour or so after a full overnight charge. That ticked me off. Thankfully had a backup charger in the car or I would've been SOL all day.

Sounds like ultimately it'll come down to 2 choices: 1) Screen Size vs. Screen Clarity, and/or 2) physical qwerty and added thickness vs. no physical qwerty and less thickness.

Other than that, I think both phones are going to be considered top tier.

I did simple root and I was on the original 2.2 and simple root brought me back to 2.1 and then I rooted and then loaded a 2.2 root rom. This allowed me to go to cm6 with a different bootloader and recovery which I have if you need it. This is the only way you will be able to load CM6.

That's correct. SAMOLED has superior black levels but it's white level (i.e. brightness) is lower then a good lcd like the EVO's. The black levels are what give the EPIC the thru the roof contrast ratio and this combined with the over saturated colors really make the screen pop. The colors aren't terribly accurate but I'm not an graphic designer/artist so I personally prefer the over-saturated colors.
