Will Android 2.0/2.1 improve performance? Eris cant keep up with even novice users.

Will Android 2.0/2.1 improve performance? The Eris is a cool phone and all but it simply cant keep up with me. There is nothing wrong with my phone also. I have rebooted it and have 80mb free memory. Same thing at Verizon store display phone. It just cant keep up and the lag and waiting periods (1 second or so) are annoying me. Yes one second is alot of lag time when you are trying to do things. It sounds like "only one second" but there are 100 of these one second lag times all over the phone. Im not even an "expert" or "hardcore" user.

Anyon know if Android 2.0 will run faster?

Playing a simple MP3 while trying to navigate the phone increases the lag times.

Why dosnt the older iphone 3g have these lag issues when they both have equal CPUs???

When will Google and HTC aknowledge the MAJOR issue with the ENTIRE phone slowing down the a crawl once available RAM goes under 30mb. (common with all Android phones) Is it SO hard to have the ability to shutdown apps and automatically remove them from ram when Im done using them??? This is the same stupidity Windows Mobile went through back in 2003. Yes I understand that Android will remove unused apps from RAM to make room for the next one but this is where the lag is coming from. The entire phone slows to a crawl unless you free up some memory with 3rd party apps.

People WISH the 2.0 will help make their phone go faster but NO ONE knows.

Trying closing some of the processes in your phone and you'll get more performance.

Thanks but you didnt even read my original post and what you posted you offered no information that I already did not know already. As I stated I already close apps to free up memory. The problem is once you open up a few apps you use up all your RAM which slows your phone down to a crawl and now you have to use taskkiller to shutdown the apps.....SO ANNOYING! Once RAM reaches around 30mb or under its LAG CITY on your phone due to the OS shuffling around data in the RAM like a swap file in Windows.

Have you tried installing spare parts and changing the menu animation to fast. This makes everything open much snappier for some reason there is a delay turned on by default kind of like on the windows start menu.

Sure you can but it lags. Nothing is "on-demand" or "instant" when using the Eris. You sem to be a very very basic user so I dont think you know what I am talking about. So you have tested this theory of 30mb or less lagg? I don't understand how less memory is going to tax the processor. There is hardly any app that requires 30mb to run so that theory does not pan out. Task killer may kill some of the apps running but there may be other processes that are running. go to settings > manage applications > and look for apps you dont use or are stock with phone and force stop them.

This might help. As for your post its possible the update will speed things up but no one knows. I personally dont haveay issues and I'm almost full.

again... I have had NO ISSUES with lag time. I am using my phone constantly and running multiple apps at a time. I don't mean to piss you off more and I do not know why yours is having lag issues and a lot of others are not. Today I looked and had 14 apps running at one time while listening to music and surfing the web with no lag time.

Its still loaded into RAM and once you start a few different apps over time (a few hours with me) your available RAM will be used up and once it reaches the magic 30mb or less number your phone turns into LAG CENTRAL because the Eris is removing apps from memory and shuffling in new data as needed kind of like Windows swap file slowdown. It has nothing to due with the CPU its the memory subsystem that gets crippled which causes the major lag.

Fine ill give u that. BUT, that doesnt explain why if you force close the apps it wouldnt clear memory and many apps are less than a meg a piece and 30mb should be plenty to run. Maybe I'm not following your logic of how processes are prioritizing.

Thought of using a task killer? Advanced Task Manager has a widget that will kill all running apps with a single tap.

Mine shows little to no lag with moderate use. I will be listening to music, surfing the web, texting, vacuuming, doing the dishes, and spending time contributing to this thread without the lag you speak of.

I can do that on my G1 with no issues either. As a matter of fact I had Pandora, Google Nav(turn by turn) and was playing Cestos. No I wasnt driving.

I had no lag or slow down on my antique/out dated G1.

There's also a program called Startup Auditor which will prevent some unused programs from starting up at all. I never use Peep, Footprints, etc so I have it prevent them from starting up to save memory for apps I want to run.

Onion: I am curious about what you say about apps never shutting down after you run them (unless I misunderstood). If the lag time increases as you say, how do you keep the Eris from bogging down? I am a novice and admit it but I joined this forum to learn about my Eris. I have had so many phones with Verizon over the last several years but this one is, by far, the most intriguing to me. I look forward to reading whatever is relevant.

If you use that many apps you are going to have alot of cache built up.

settings-apps-manage apps- (name of apps goes here) -clear cache

browser
market
and many others

They pile cache into the internal memory and this will cause lag. Having apps in the background does not cause the lag you are refering to. If anything it makes the app start faster the next time you use it, if its still in the back ground.

Before you tell other that they dont know anything about their phones, why dont you some research and find out for yourself. There is a search button in the upper right corner of every forums page. Start there. Being rude and putting others down will not get you any help and most people here will report you and ignore you.

I do it to my G1 every couple of days. Been doing it for almost a year. No issues and NO LAG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I restart my phone maybe once every couple of days and I NEVER get slowdown whatsoever.

I never shut my phone off, except when I update the OS.

According to all knowing onion, you don't do jack shit on your phone EVER and you never use it, that's why it never lags.

Yeah the 150+ apps on my phone doesnt mean anything either.
You would think if someone was going to have lag it would be someone with that many apps. I use about 20 of the daily and a small few maybe 1 every week or so.

Its your phone and you have that choice. Its just advice on how to speed up the phone and add memory. I think there is an app or one coming out shortly that will do it for you. I do it myself so I know whats happening to my phone, even though some people think I dont know what is happening to it.

If you have been on this forum for more than a couple of weeks, you will know not many people have done any research on the device they bought. They wont even do a search on the forums or Google before posting a question.

Android kills apps when it needs to do it. The Android operating system is built that way on purpose.

reduce screen brightness
switch to 2g if you dont need speed of 3g
turn off GPS when not needed
remove widgets that you dont use or need
