Don't freak out...you'll be fine...

Just make sure you first do a Nandroid backup as soon as your selected method allows.

Then, go ahead and do both 'Wipe data/factory reset' and 'Wipe Dalvik-cache' (wiping both doesn't hurt anything...it just makes rebooting a little slower because of things needing to be rebuilt).

Then you can flash Ivan's, reboot, and enjoy being rooted!

After you did steps 1 and 2, did you do a simple reboot (i.e., power off and power back on)? (you've got to reboot before you can try to go into recovery)...

Yep.

Just power down.

Then press and hold volume-UP and the end/power button at the same time (keep pressing volume-UP until you see Amon_RA's recovery menu -- it'll only take a few seconds).

Then, you should take a Nandroid backup as your first thing (its not totally necessary, but its a good thing to always do before you actually flash something).

Let me know when you get to Amon's recovery menu...

Yep, you're doing great and you are almost there...just select 'Backup/Restore', and then 'Nand Backup'...it'll ask you to confirm by pressing the trackball. It'll just take a few minutes...you'll see his progress with "...."'s scrolling across the screen.

After it finishes, you can return to the main menu and get ready to flash Ivan's ROM (you put the ROM in the /sdcard directory, right?)

Okay, so the Nandroid backup completed?

And you are going to forego flashing Ivan's now?

If you are going to just flash rootme.zip, then you do not want to do the wipes (its fine if you just want to flash rootme.zip to just give you root access)

...(and yes, you press in the trackball to select things).

Yes, if you just flashed rootme.zip, then you can just return to the main menu like you did before and select "Reboot" and voila', you are rooted! (yay! congrats!)

Oh, yeah, don't forget to turn USB debugging on (you need that for the SuperUser app to work).

Okay, did you turn USB debugging on? (you need that for the SuperUser app).

Since all you've done is give yourself root capability, you are still a little limited on what you can do. You can download and install root-only apps like drocap2 (screen capture), Root Explorer, wi-fi tether, etc.

Why don't you download drocap2 and let's test root out?

After you download it (free in the Market) and launch it, the SuperUser app should prompt you to ask if you want to give permission for this app to run (select yes, always allow (I forget the exact prompts)). Then, the drocap2 app will launch and you press start, navigate to whatever screen you want, shake the phone (carefully, don't drop it ), and it will capture the screen image and save it in its gallery. I think the regular gallery app will allow you to view it.

If you have trouble getting the SuperUser app to acknowledge drocap2, you might have to run it (the SuperUser app) once from the app drawer first (I don't really remember).

Hey, no problem! I'm very happy for you!

Okay, just to recap a little here:

1. You've just got root ability/capability, but you are basically limited to installing and running root-only apps and (very carefully) removing bloatware.

2. If you do decide to remove any bloatware, carefully read and research before doing anything. Then, always, always make a Nandroid backup before deleting anything scary/major/system-related or flashing anything.

3. You've got some options to decide what to do next...

-- you can flash Zanfur's overclocking patch and overclock your current setup (without having to flash a custom ROM!)

-- you can install a custom ROM of your choice

-- you can keep on with your current ROM (nothing wrong with that...I personally never had any problems with my phone and probably would have just done what you just did and perhaps do a little overclocking--I didn't have the choices that you do when I rooted).

4. Don't forget to always:

-- make a Nandroid backup before flashing or doing major alterations to your phone

-- if you do decide to flash a custom ROM, make sure you do the wipes as instructed by the dev's ROM threads (it doesn't hurt to do both 'wipe data/factory reset' and 'wipe dalvik-cache')

5. If you do decide to overclock, don't enable the set-on-boot toggle in setCPU until you are sure that you running stable at your selected speed.

6. It also might be a good idea to copy your /sdcard/nandroid/ subdirectories off to your PC just for safekeeping occasionally.

Let us know if you have any other questions. I'm sure a lot of the above it repetitious for you if you been reading through the various threads--it'll just mean more to you now since you can actually do root-stuff, eh?

Welcome to root. I did the same as you just rooting with my os still in place but then quickly moved on to custom roms because there wasn't much difference. Custom roms will allow much more customization. Give one of them a try when you feel adventurous.

I think the sd ext wipes are only relevant when apps2sd is used. I've never used apps2sd (a2sd), so I'm not your best source of information re. that (doogald and mhotovec is one of your best go-to-guys re. this).

If you are not going to use a2sd (and zach.xtr's dev thread indicates that you should have plenty of space that a2sd should be "irrelevant" (quoting him ) it should be a non-issue.

Scary is right, you don't need to wipe sd-ext since you've never used apps2sd before. And he is also right that you won't need to use it if you go with either xtrSense 4.2 or greater.
You'll find that Scary is right a lot, it's rather scary, actually...
