Another question from me im afraid.
I have had my desire for one week now and have been playing around with apps etc (first android phone)
I got a message today saying my phone memory was low (at one point i couldnt install an app. I have always uninstalled apps that i do not want and i have also moved as many as will allow to the SD card. Now i o dont think i have many apps installed (13 that wont allow me to move to the SD card) and yet i seem to be at my limit.
Is this normal and is there a way around it. I was expecting to be able to install a lot more than this or is it a limitation of the desire?
Currently my phone is showing 25.00MB of space left but i have just had to unistall afew as it was showing 17MB previously.

Thanks

Nath

PS i did have a search but i couldnt find if this has been covered previously.

Another addition is that i have checked my cache and EVERY app except for google search showed zero. I cleared the google search which added 0.3 to my storage space. Is this correct though that nothing has any cache as i been using the phone a lot recently including market , games, contacts, SMS, mail etc.

Thanks

OK update on this. I have used the fix found on here to allow me to move a lot of my apps to SD card which has certainly halped but i am still desparately short on memory.

Phone is a Desire
Android V2.2
Every App that can be moved to SD card has been except for Handcent as it would not load the widget from the SD card on boot up, and Free power widget (respective sizes of those 2 are 3.85MB and 416KB)
All other downloaded apps that are not able to be moved are as follows.
Maps (i thought this was preinstalled on my phone but shows up in my downloads maybe because i have updated it) 8.66MB
Facebook 4.78MB
Decibel 600KB
Bubble 180KB

I have in total 55 apps installed on the SD card (including some icon and Handcent font packs etc) so i dont know if some of those are somehow taking up spaxce on the phone storage.

I have cleared the Cache and currently right now have 19.59MB on the phone.

The largest App by a long way is Mail (the standard APP) which ic 52.85MB. I have cleared out both my inbox's (one POP and 1 Exchange but it doesnt reduce the size at all.

If anyone can help on this i would really appreciate it as i am struggling to even have enough room to perform updates etc (the last one i think told me i needed at least 25MB of space to be able to install it?

Thanks

Nathan

I think you might need to clear cache or data on the mail app although not sure if that last one will lose everything Including settings.

Its probably worth changing the length of time you keep emails for too (in settings).

Other than that perhaps look into getting a 3rd party mail app that stores mail on teh SD card. I hear K9 is good and that it does this.

Yeah i have cleared the Cache but didnt want to clear data for the exact reason you mentioned.
I have deleted all emails in both of my inboxes and this didnt seem to do anything to the amopunt of space it used.
I have just checked and one account was set to 3 days mail and the aother was set to all mail so i have changed them both to 3 days. I have also made sure that attchements are sent to external storage.

I think that because deleting my mails doesnt free up any space whatsoever, changing to K9 will not help the situation at all but please let me know if im wrong. Also i think that K9 will not handle Exchange??

Thanks

Edit: I have just deleted all emails on both accounts and the mail app is still sitting at 51.58MB

I have done that second method and moved everything possibly (except the previously mentioned Handcent and free power meter). The trouble is that even after doing that i am left with still very little memory.

Can anyone who is unsing the original mail app please check and see what size it is taking up in the manage apps menu.

Thanks

Ok just for comparison I have 43 apps installed (I've also used the apps to SD trick you have) and I currently have 44mb free internal storage approx.

I'm using the normal MAIL app (with 2 accounts and no mail stored) and it's showing as 1.98mb in use.

just a thought did you by any chance install that game need for speed shift, the reason i ask is when i installed it over 50mb of internal memory was used by it.
When i uninstalled it & rebooted the phone i could not get that 50mb back either till i reinstalled my rom.

I have installed need for speed yesterday but this issue existed before i did that. NFS has used hardly any memory either on the phone or the SD card (shows 464KB on the App manager)

I guess that hows up that i definately have a problem with the original Mail app so i may try clearing all data from the mail App and starting again with creating my accounts.

Are the majority of your Apps installed on the SD card?

Thanks

Well i have cleared all the data from the mail app and instantly gained all my space back (50MB). I then set up the accounts again exactly as before and downloaded the last 3 days mail from both and still the email app is sitting at 2.14MB (nearly a 50MB improvement from before). I can only assume that there was something nasty in there from when i previously had the 'download all emails option ticked' and changing this setting did not delete or properly remove this???

Either way im not sitting at 72MB of internaly memory free. I may do some experimentation with checking the 'download all mail' option again and try and find out exactly was eating up storage.

I did also try to set up my BT internet account as IMAP but without success.

You will need to clear the data from your mail app in order to free up the space. There is some sort of bug with it whereby it doesn't release space properly. I stopped using it ages ago and deleted my account details yet it was still taking up space until I managed to clear the data after updating to froyo.

Now that you have reduced the limit to three days it shouldn't get as big again. However as other have said, k-9 is better and takes up less space.
