Help Droid 2 frequently crashes when playing music

I'm the proud owner of a month old Droid 2, but the damn thing keeps freezing or locks up completely when I play my music on it - sometimes it even restarts on its own. It doesn't matter if I'm playing my own MP3's or Pandora. While at work this happens maybe 3 to 5 times a day (docked to a desk/home charger from Verizon) and it's really frustrating. I noticed this started happening once my phone updated to 2.2.20 a few weeks ago.

Just this past weekend I took it to my local Verizon dealer. They said they updated the PRL and this often corrects the problem. I got the phone home and it locked up immediately. I've restarted repeatedly, removed the SD card and battery but still no change.

Any suggestions? This will be my fourth replacement if I need to take it back and have it replaced.

Thanks

This happens to me a couple times a week, and it's usually when I'm trying to play a file that I had just transferred to my phone with Dropbox or playing a wma file, but I've had other issues with music (including Pandora) too. It sounds like your problems are orders of magnitude greater than mine though.

How are you getting music on your phone? What file type is it?

A vast majority of my music is MP3 stored on my SD card, some of it is imported through a program called MP3 player - but all are MP3.

I just discovered the damnedest thing. My phone crashed (again) while sitting at my desk. I pulled the battery and the SD card and found a 16gb SD card jammed in above my 8gb card??? I checked both cards - one has all of my music, another has only some of the selection installed and a majority of my AppBrian apps are not installed any longer.

WTH?

The Droid2 doesn't accommodate 2 SD cards, does it? I'm wondering if the Verizon rep who updated the PRL had to install something from that SD card? I have no idea where this card came from.

um, that is probably the most strange thing I have heard on these forums. This made me check my phone and there is simply no way that there could be 2 cards in there. You should take a picture of it.

I could take a pic with my wife's Droid when she gets home later tonight but all it looks like is two SD cards sitting on top of one another. Funny thing is the slot is wide enough to fit two but don't think it's meant too.

I got to speak to level 2 at tech support today (I stumped level 1 with a question about the 'Contacts'). When he said "Is there anything else?" I brought this up.

He suggested getting a player from Market.

Me: "this will be better than the built-in one?"

Him: "Oh most likely. That's why people write them - because the built-in ones suck sometimes."

I downloaded the one made by "Fun Games" - or maybe "Fun Game" - I think it's the first one that comes up when you search for "mp3 player' in Market. It's free. So far, after an hour or 2 of playing, no crashes! Longest I've ever gone by a factor of 3 or 4.

this happens to me several times a day too, but it didn't start happening until i got the multimedia dock. i used to listen to the built in music player and pandora all day with no issues when it was plugged into the regular charger or just using battery. so to me it has something to do with the dock station or the dock screen. i will try another music player from market and see if i have the same problem.

You can slide a second sd card on top of the one already installed. They are thin enough and there is enough space in-between that a second one would fit. It will not connect up electrically though as there is one already installed and its installed fully.

To me it really sounds like a Verizon tech was replacing the card because he or she thought something was wrong with the one installed. They were most likely swapping it out with one they had lying around and did not realize the one they thought was bad was still installed. This tech most likely needs glasses or contacts. lol
