Im going about changing the launcher on my captivate and made what seems like a crucial error. Im rooted, opened Titanium Backup and un-installed twlauncher. Everything seemed ok at first untill i went to my homescreen...total blackness. Ultimately i wanted to get rid of tw because i dont like the UI wanted the stock droid launcher or LauncherPro or something.

How do install the .apk file without touchwiz? or get my launcher back

Well if you actually did delete TW and not just freeze it, then you might be able to find the TW file somewhere im sure. Maybe boot into recovery mode and reinstall the packets? I think that works like the "windows repair" option that reinstalls stuff like that.. im not sure tho, ive never used that method. I supose in a pinch, reflashing with Odin would work.

My advice to you, if you are going to get into the "dark side" and start hacking and doing stuff to your phone, be sure you are familiar with the procedures, what they are, what they do, and how. Always keep good backups. Be aware of what could go wrong and how to fix it if it does go wrong. Understand that even just rooting voids your warrenty and once you cross the line (rom flashing, app deleting) there is a chance you may never get it back to exactly the way it was. Proceed with caution and be aware of what could happen.

If you want to run a different launcher is no big deal. You dont need to root, hack or anything. You dont even need to delete TW at all. Just download the launcher, like Launcherpro and set it as your default launcher.. thats all, no hacking, smacking or deleting.

You can't uninstall Touchwiz (Well, I guess you can, just don't). Although you can replace it with a different launcher, Touchwiz is still always running in the background and it needs to be running for the phone to function properly.

Been running without tw.launcher for a couple days with no ill affects whatsoever as I always use adw.launcher. However, on the plus side, it freed up 40 to 50 mb of having tw.launcher removed and not constantly running in the background.

On a side note: for anyone considering trying this make sure make sure you have another launcher installed and running before you uninstall tw.launcher and have tw.launcher backed up with TiBU in case we do run into a problem without having it an find out later we do actually need it for something.

Ya use home switcher to set the new default launcher before deleting the stock one. However with cog 2.1.7 i was getting fc's on my contacts after deleting the twlauncher, i guess this is fixed with 2.2b7?

On Cog 2.2b6 here and no FC on contacts or anything else.

It may be that in eclair there is/are dependencies on tw.launcher for contacts and possibly other apps. There does not seem to be any on froyo.

Yup, B7 is flawless so far. The ONLY thing i have notice, and its probably nothing is that with beta7 after you hit the power button to wake the phone, it takes a spit second for the screen to come on. Compaired to before it seems like a split second delay. Oh and my GPS is better now than it has ever been. Super quick locks, accurate, and even works for navigation! My first Capt the GPS worked this good for the first few days, then it started going bad. After 5 days it was worthless and the phone started crashing every time the phone rang! Lets hope it stays like this for more than a few days!

I did the same thing as you... but in a different manner, I hard reset my galaxy S without putting back the twlauncher.. lolx.. took me a day to figure out how to make it back. I think you need to flash your phone with odin to get it back. I followed the link from adbandroidgames.blogspot.com
and fixed my problem

Hi guys, I just did the exact same thing ... I thought maybe I could restore from Titanium Backup, but of course I couldn't get to any of my apps to try to restore it!

What I did to fix it is I installed a new TWLauncher from xda-developers here: TW Launcher 4.5 - xda-developers

I have Sideload Wonder installed on my computer, so i just plugged my phone in. Then I loaded only the TW4Launcher.apk (not the whole zipped package) using Sideload Wonder and rebooted the phone.

Success!!! I had to reset all the icons on my home screens, but didn't have to wipe the OS, reset from default, or anything else like that.

I thought about looking for the original TWLauncher once i got access to my phone again, but this one is a modified version of the original and I already like it better.

Hope this helps.
Good luck!
