At my wit's end trying to get Windows7 Pro 64bit to recognize the Captivate either as a hard drive or media player (or anything). Get the "USB Device not recognized" every single time.

Works as a storage device on XP laptop but not in media player mode other wise I could work around it. Tried the drivers from Samsung & also for the Galaxy S - uninstalling all drivers and reinstalling each time, then restarting both phone & computer & also unplugging the PSU connections to the motherboard which I read worked sometimes on some other forums.

Even went and got a PCI-USB expansion card and same result. Don't really know what to do now besides reinstall Win7 which I really really don't wanna do. Wish there was some way to connect it in media player mode over bluetooth.

K so for some reason now it works...I clicked around for hours and I think this is what I did:
After installing the 64bit drivers and also the ones from the samsung page, put the device in storage mode and connected it.

When the message for USB device not recognized appeared I went to device manager and manually updated the driver...pointing it in turn at each folder in the 64bit driver install until I got to one that managed to not give an error 43...was able to get the card & phone storage to show as drives in my computer.

Switched to Media player mode and had same problem...turned off phone & restarted computer and now works. So confused.

Hope this is useful:

When you install the USB drivers from the first post, be sure to "install from a specific location" 2-3 times as your computer finds more and more devices to install. If you choose "search and download automatically", you end up installing sucky versions of drivers. So each time windows finds a new android device or new samsung device (it will do this 2-3 times), choose the file that you first downloaded and installed manually.

maybe this has been beaten to death, but here is my experience so far:

WinXP 32-bit SP3
-first I tried installing the Captivate driver, but while unpacking the .zip (using winrar 3.93) I get this error message:

-next I try the x86 Galaxy S driver link, the .exe file, and that installs fine.
-have "Mass Storage" selected under USB settings on the phone
-connect phone to computer
-on the phone, a USB icon appears on the top left part of the screen

**on the phone (this is the part I was confused with people stating that you needed to choose "Mount", from reading through this thread the comments made it sound like the notifications would appear on the Computer, not the Phone, and on the Computer was where you were supposed to choose "Mount", not the case apparently, oops!);
1) I slide down the top menu on the phone
2) click on the item that says "USB Connected"
3) a pop-up window on the phone will appear, chose "Mount"

from other comments I read, someone mentioned that the front USB port on their computer would not let them mount the phone. I am able to mount it on the front and rear USB ports.

at work I use Win7 64-bit. The interesting thing there is I was able to download and unpack the .zip file (again winrar 3.93) for the Captivate, and I did not receive a corrupted files dialogue. Now that I can do it on my home computer I will see what happens at work.

Works fine on front and rear USB ports. It is odd though that the Captivate driver could unzip without being corrupted on this machine, while on my XP machine the corrupted file dialog appeared

Just installed it on my Dell M90 running 32-bit Win 7. A little "couldn't find the file" that I skipped through and all worked well anyway's... I'm not rooted either.

I'm finally free of my iPhone!!! This is a nice little piece of kit, and now that I can tether... really useful when I travel.

I've had the phone a couple weeks now and have been having issues with connecting to my Windows 7 64 PC. I finally got it work using the Galaxy S 64 drivers and by plugging into the back of my PC instead of the front ports (not sure why this makes any difference, but it did). Was finally able to sideload scummvm (only to find that it doesn't work ).

Now if only the GPS worked...

yesterday I downloaded new kies from samsung UK site. I tried it still did not work. However when I connected to motherboard USB port, bam! it worked fine. I tried this one 2 different computers. They both have win 7 64.(win 7 32bit: any usb port will work for some reason)
With new kies, you do not need any separate drivers. I uninstalled all my drivers and installed new kies and it has newest drivers built in.
Now with Kies, I can finally manage my phone from PC.

Again thanks for your help! I can now finally enjoy my phone!

Did it this morning on the way to work, so I did not spend much time with it. However once connected and on Captivate, mounted in USB mode. Two new disk drives showed up in Linux Mint, titled 16 Gig volume and 2GB volume.

The 2GB volume was the SD card and I was able to open documents and pictures from the SD card with no driver issues whatsoever.

Two Linux based devices talking to each other with no problems, - who knew?

did you try going to application in settings, usb settings and change to mass storage mode, then try connecting the phone, then it should recognize it, then on phone slide down tray and hit mount.

Finally got it to work! You rock!!!!!!!

My goal was to get PC internet to work on my Netbook Windows XP Home 32bit. Samsung Captivate drivers worked for Mass Storage, but not "PC internet" (Allows Phone to be Modem via a USB connection a.k.a. USB Tethering).

when I go to those sites, I just get spam to download some $30 driver program! Caution, there aren't actually any drivers here! of course, at my age, I could just be blind, there's tons of hyperlinks on the page.
Can anyone tell me where to find the actual drivers? I can't get any of this to work on windows Vista.

I finally found the Galaxy drivers, and installed them. In order to get it to work I had to remove the external SD card. After that, the drivers installed and I was able to connect to the PC. I reinstalled the SD card, and was able to mount both the external and internal cards to the PC. I was able to tether as well. Try removing your external card.

That's very interesting... I haven't tried that yet, most due to my lack of an external microSD... Do you think it's worth buying a card to try? (my frugality also means I have to order it online, and not buy one from a store haha)

Kies worked for one day for me on Windows Vista. Now, the program nor the computer even recognizes the USB cable when plugged in. I tried another cable and even plugging it in on the older computer running XP (no drivers or anything) and nothing pops up. Its like they are "Dead Cables". But, you and I know better. I've simply given it up...Comeon Samsung the phone seems to be fine. Give us a little better support. Particularly for folks like me that don't have a clue and our grandkids live 10 hours away....

This is what I had to do as well. After a nightmare of a time trying to get Windows to even recognize the phone I still had a problem of the the connection just dying after a few minutes. So basically useless for transferring music. I use Rhapsody and I fixed this by disconnecting the SD card so the program could only see the internal memory which seems to be working ok.

I installed both the smaller samsung captivate drivers then the Galaxy S drivers for it to finally work for me on winderz 7 64 bitz

Samsung informed me that no one has plans to publish 64-bit drivers for Windows 7. That is, they couldn't "speculate as to when/if that would happen." I responded that there's an awful lot of 64-bitness out there right now, and they'd do well to address the issue.

So I tried to install the drivers on my winxp pc, but I got a popup message that installing this may destabilize my pc. Does anyone else get this message?

I get this message and cannot install the drivers. Any help out there from the experts? Win XP Service Pack 3.

My experience: Using windows xp

-connected as mass storage...installed fine to my laptop..created 2 storage drives, but when clicking on the drives I get the message "connect usb drive".

-I then tried to connect as "kies"..it connects and now I can see the phone so I can drag and drop.

Who knows...glad it connected tho, as it's a useless thing without being able to connect to a PC

Idky they made it so hard to find the driver's for this phone, but after what feels like years of searching I've finally found them. I am indebted to you sir... or ma'am.

i switched the usb to mass storage and mounted it..and it works i get to drag and drop stuff in and out of my phone to the computer.

Im sorry but what are the drivers for exactly? and please no acronyms...lol

Sounds like you forgot to mount it after connecting the cable.
