All Galaxy S phones have the same size 4" Super AMOLED screens. Its in Samsung's interest to have one unified clear cover for all the phones to improve manufacturing efficiency and save on inventory costs.
Still, a good screen protector is always a good addition to protecting your expensive toy. Personally I use Martin Fields which is a complete protection film, all the glass areas are protected with tailored and precise cut outs.
Posting in a thread that has been pushed back several pages is not against the rule, but it's frowned upon a little since it buries newer threads that typically requires more attention. (Of course, it's a different case if you are the OP and wants more input from other users.)
The drop tests are relative. Your phone may or may not break depending upon your luck. My advice is hold your phone like if it falls it will break and then if it doesnt then it is bonus.
The screen of my brother' SGS broke when it fell on road from his pocket i.e. maybe a height of 3-4 ft. Earlier then that it had survived 2 drops on a marble floor from a height of 3-4 ft.
At 5:30 in the video.... This is why I do keep my S in a silicone rubber case. The phone itself is rather slippery, one can't be too careful.
Actually I've only managed to break a screen on a phone once. A Nokia N95, the screen broke when it was in my pocket. I found the N95's LCD screen has NO protection whatsoever, a slight pressure will crack it.
There is also some kinda plastic cover you can put on phones i found on the web that is very very strong if i find it i will try post the clip up here (I know its old thread but for people that are intrested)
You can scratch everything so that doesn't say much. The easiest way to scratch hard surfaces like Gorilla Glass is to use extremely small objects, which for example can be tiny metal shards that's fallen off your keys and stuck in your pocket.
That's why people that have gotten scratches often don't understand where they came from.
Within 1 day of having my SGS my girlfriend dropped it and the screen cracked and the phone died soon after. Thank god for insurance. Also on my new one i got screen protectors off ebay for like
Sorry to dredge this thread up again but...has anyone actually heard confirmation from Samsung that Gorilla Glass is indeed used in the Galaxy S? They sure haven't advertised it - it does not appear on their website.
I am in Germany and posed this question to Samsung support and was told emphatically that the Galaxy S's screen is NOT made out of Gorilla Glass.
If I were Samsung and the screen of the Galaxy did indeed have GG, I would advertise this fact...
First thing I did when I peeled off the plastic when I unpacked my phone was to put a screen protector on it. Shouldn't even think twice about it with such a large sexy screen.
