surely this cant be true!

on my pim you can only set a reminder alarm as an offset from the event date/time and not as a specific date/time for the alarm itself

say it aint so

what? man you need to explain yourself more. And do some searches. You have posted like 8 threads in the last few days, that have all been answered. You need to search and try to find a solution on your own first.

Second, I dont understand what you are asking. Your saying you cant set an alarm for a specific time? or a calendar event? I can set both alarms and calendars for whatever time i want.

re alarms: say i set an event for 12:00 on 27/10 - when i set reminder for that event in my pim, only able to set it 1,2,4,6....hours before event time

i questioned them about this and they said this was how it was done on android

are they wrong?

The calendar on my Evo can set 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, 1hr, 2hr, 3hr, 12hr, 24hr, 2 days, or one week before the event. Just hit Menu-settings-reminder settings.

yes mine does that too - but on iphone version instead of setting reminder 6 hours before hand - you can set it for 27/10 @ 06:00 say - when the actual event is say 27/10 @ 14:30

its extra tricky if you use a lot of all day events like i do

Well that seems like the problem. Stop using that app and use the stock android calendar.

i think it is .. dictated by the application.. and the programmer that developed it.

1.. work with it.. and you can get used to it.. You just want what you are used to... which was the iphone developed way by that developer. So you have to relearn..

2. it is android.. if you dont like one app/developer way... find something else....

my suggestion.. try to forget how the iphone did it.. you will be happier! example.. reverse gear in manual cars: japan= right and down; german = left and up... total opposites.. it took me a month to get used to german way

thanks guys - but in this case iphone was better - the android way is a bit backward in this point imo - why not allow me to set the exact reminder time? rather than try and figure out how many hours before it needs to be

the developer in question also was the developer for my iphone app - so i know they are good

ive checked the default cal app and that is limited in the same way

anyone got the contact email for google? think an email is in order

Your thinking is backwards. Why try to set an exact time, when you can just set a reminder earlier. For example, i set my work events 30 minutes early, cause I know it will take me 30 minutes to get to work. Why would I try to figure out exactly what time to set it, when I can just set it 30 minutes early.

But I've found with phone apps that people do tend to
Use them in quite different manners.
Neither is wrong. Just different style of use.

Well I'm kinda new here, and only had my phone for a week now, but I ditched the phone calender for Touch Calendar (beta), only because I couldn't get it to sync with my Outlook properly.

Anyways, I can set a reminder for On time, 5 or 15 minutes, 1 hour, 2 days, 1 week, or I can customize it to whatever. The calendar works much better than the phone calender and is easy to use and has many options.

This is default behaviour for all calendar applications. Google Calendar, Outlook, Lotus Notes, Android, Blackberry etc etc etc

If you set a reminder for an event, all of these applications will want the reminder to be in direct relation to the event...I would go as far as to say that this is industry standard for calendar and scheduling applications. I have never seen it done any other way.

Obviously the iPhone is trying something different by combining the alarm application with the calendar app and this is what you want to achieve. I have never seen anything that behaves this way on Android...although I haven't looked to be fair as this is completely normal and expected.

You could set an alarm in the Clock application, but I don't know if there is a limit...and of course, this wouldn't give you an ideal overview as easily as with the calendar though.

Just my 2cents

Just checked a colleagues iPhone running ios 4.02 and we created a calendar entry...went to the reminder option to set an alert...and it immediately prompted for a series of times "before" the event...5 mins, 15 mins .... 1 week etc.

So, based on this...the iPhone is setting this normally too.

Unless you mean another application such as notes...I use Mobisle Notes Free and you can specify an exact alarm time to be reminded of any note created..

I suspect the iPhone notes to be the same...

It sounds to me like the OP is confusing reminders with alarms. Reminders are set relevant to the event in the calendar (per the message above this is standard for most calendaring apps on various platforms). Alarms can be set for whatever time you'd like.

If the approach used for the reminder doesn't work for the OP then adjust the start of event and set a 0 minute reminder. Or create a reminder event. There's always more than one way to skin a cat.

My Nokia dumb phone calendar worked only the way this question is posed - set the event date/time but the event alarm is also set for a given date/time with no relation to the event start time.

But I agree that this approach is contrary to any other calendar app I have used.

OP is just used to that style of reminder. It's just unfortunate that most of the world(apps) doesn't spin that way. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a bit like trying to buy baseball gloves for lefties.

I'm definitely not confused. Well about reminders anyway

Although new to Android I have used other smartphone platforms
With third party calendars and they were able to set reminder
Date time as I specified. It's just a personal preference imo.

And I always like my phones and apps to go beyond what is standard
Otherwise I'd just have a regular phone
