Ok, I am going to root this weekend. A few questions. Can I just root and use ti backup to freeze my apps I dont want running. All I want to do is get bettery life. I dont want to rom or kernell. Will this give me better battery life? I dont want to use setcpu either. Im happy with my phone apearance, I just want better life out of it. Nitsuj has helped me alot (thank you) and I just want to make sure that I read all the tutarals right and that im ok to just root. Thanks in advance!

yeah the links bruins gave you are good to look over to see what you can/cant freeze.

root in and of itself is painless (although you may have to run it twice to get it to work)

autokiller is a root app used by many of us that allows you to tinker with the memory settings in android and it *may* help your battery life. theres about 8 settings to play with and see if that helps.

ti bu is the way to go with freezing, just leave the google apps alone or you may freeze market d/ls.

you dont need setcpu at all...however you can set processor profiles in it that may help battery life...ie setting the max proccessor speed below 500 when screen is off, or under 40% battery max processor 800, etc, etc.

just one last thing though, root will most likely not block an ota, but installing clockwork mod recovery (usually the 2nd step in hacking your fascinate) will most in all likelyhood kill the ota for you as it alters the phone. (although i cant say it will stop it, generally on other android phones it does)

If you root, I strongly recommend CWM. CWM allows you to essentially take a "screenshot" image (nandroid) of whatever your phone is and restore it just in case something goes wrong. If you're afraid of bricking your phone, you shouldn't be worrying too much about rooting. I would guess about 90% of the bricked phone cases out there are people flashing early stages of ROMs/Kernels or removing stuff from root they aren't supposed to. Like I said before, you seem like a person who really wants to know what a person needs to do before doing it. With your mentality, you should be fine, just continue to research first!:)

Nandroid? Ok....how do I back my phone up before I root? Or is that not needed? How do I baxk it up after root? Again, Is that not needed here either? You guys are seriously smart people! I cant believe the support im getting from people that dont even know me...if only the world could act like the andeoid community! lol

yeah clockwork mod is important, but i just pointed out you might not get the ota with it.

Then I dont think clock workmod is for me...i want to remain as stock as possible. I want the 2.2 ota update when it comes out I dont want mess that up. Is there any other way to back up my phone before rooting? And what exactly does backing up a phone do?

And thats fine. Wait a week or two for Froyo and then do all your mods, additions. Lets be honest we probably wont see any 2.3 Gingerbread till the summer if even that early:(

Saps, do you mean wait a week until I root or wait til I get froyo to do any mods cuz ill lose root? I will lose root when I ota update to 2.2, but I can reroot with the same root file I have right?

Bob
I meant wait a week for Froyo if you want and are hesistant. Even though you can root your eclair in 3 minutes if you dont feel like doing it thats fine too. And yes after froyo you will have to re-root if you get the OTA

Do we have to use ADB to get back to stock ? The reason I ask is that I pretty much suck with using DOS commands.
I also wouldn't mind waiting for froyo if its not that far off. After the froyo update then I can give in to my flashing addiction. I want to flash and over clock till I burn this thing up !!!! j/k I want to hit 3000 in Quadrant, on and on
Damn with the weekend here I don't know if I am going to not be able give in to this craving !!!! :) Damn ! I'm doomed. Please help me, I've fallen, (for the fascinate) and I can't get up !!!

No, I dont think you will see me in the I borked my phone forum! Lol I am only rooting. So now that I am rooted, I froze a bunch of crap and turned my auto killer to extreme and set cpu to moderate. What else will give me more battery life?

Personally I wouldn't set to exreme as that may have a negative impact on ur battery as u'll be restarting apps more frequently that u use a lot and that ll hurt battery life. Moderate is usually better
