We would like to inform you that the Motorola Defy will be provided with a 2GB internal shared memory, 2GB microSD card and 512 of RAM.

We can also inform you that the Motorola Defy will be updated to the Android 2.2 (Froyo), but we do not have a date for that.

I just bought a Defy, coming from a Vibrant/Fascinate I must say Froyo is even more important for this phone. I don't see this phone getting the same level of attention from devs on ROMs and kernels, and froyo would help smooth out the rough edges this phone has. I've been very happy with it so far, but there are some things I miss and froyo would fix that.

ha i tried the vibrant and g2, the defy gets way better reception and data than both. i got the defy for $48 at walmart while the g2 is $148. the only other phone that attracts me is the mytouch 4g but im worried that it wouldnt get as good reception as the defy.

bought a new g-2 10/28 returned it on 11/5 for a DEFY.

better signal grabber.

way, way longer battery life.

preloaded wifi calling that works better than native UMA on other t-mo phones.

i'm really glad the 'techno heads' will avoid this phone.

can't wait for a vehicle bracket so i can take videos on my bike.

By the time 2.2 arrives on Defy, we may be crying for 2.3 (if it is supported by the Defy's hardware).

Not necessarily; I'm not crying for 2.2 as it is. It'll be nice when it shows up. I'll welcome the improvements it carries but I'm definitely not crying for it. As for 2.3, the advances from 2.2 to 2.3 seems less so than from 2.1 to 2.2 (comparing the chart on wiki). So the way I see it, when we get 2.2 (which I'm almost positive we will according to what I've read around the web) that may be all we need for the life of the device. I try not to get caught up in the "latest and greatest" bandwagon, because it's not the best way always.

Last poster pretty much has it right. This is not a high end device. Some upgrades from Motorola would be nice but people can't really complain if they take a while. Bit different to my Galaxy S... At least Motorola don't treat their customers as badly as Samsung do.

I strongly disagree with you. First of all, maybe its not top performance device, but it is definitely above average - specially compared to low end phones like Samsung i57oo or i5800

And second one - 2.2 is not only "just an update" but:

a) rewriten java vm (dalvik) - which gives you a huge computing performance in executing java code (for example for Samsung i5700 it is a jump from ~4 in linpack score up to 9+ (!) using Frozen Eclair libraries.

b) well let's face it - every day more and more apps just REQUIRE Froyo to work - because it is just written using classes available in 2.2, and they're not always backward compatible...

If the device is 'top performance' or not is irrelevant. The price places it as a low to mid range device.

It's definitely priced mid level, however performance-wise it's definitely very capable. It has better specs than the original droid; 800 mhz omap vs the droid's 533 (though that could be oc'd), same screen and res, 512mb RAM vs the droid's 256, etc. I do know that even though it's in the same series as the cliq, cliq xt, flipout, flipside, etc (MBxxx series) it kills them in performance. It's a mini-beast. Moto and tmo should have marketed it differently, but the price may have been higher if they targeted a broader audience; this is why everyone wants to think they need a G2 or MT 4G. Ad placement does a lot for how these devices are presented and the public reacts accordingly.

As for 2.2, the reasons stated in the above post are why I want very much for the defy to get it, and I think it will, but I'm not in a rush. It's not like the phone is sluggish and an under-performer as it stands now. When 2.2 hits it'll be even more of a beast.

Must admit I have no performance issues either and I moved over from a Desire. The only reason I want Froyo is for flash support. Apps to sd was a big issue on the Desire, but 2gb memory on the Defy means I'm not even worried about that.

Aside from the occasional lag when switching between menus, is the the limited sync and bluetooth settings (not sure if that can be helped via rooting). I'm having a problem getting news/rss feeds to update after an initial 40 articles. As far as bluetooth, even though its set to "always pair" with my car's head unit, I always have to do it manually. Even after connecting, its another 5 minutes before I get a "phonebook transfer request", which again, I have to initiate manually.

I don't think that my original Droid, when first released w/2.0, did not have these issues, and the menus were more robust.

I don't use rss, but pairing with my bluetooth headset is automatic (plantronics voyager 510). Not sure what you mean by more robust menus?

Sure it doesn't have a snapdragon.
Sure it doesn't have hummingbird.
It certainly doesn't have an A4.

But, its still a 1ghz processor downclocked to 800 mhz from what I hear.

I dunno.. I am considering getting this phone.. and lately I've begun to wonder what "high end" really is here :/

I'm not denying that hummingbird or A4 may be capable of more raw power at the end of the day..

But, submerge em in water an see what happens

The defy is definitely a sleeper beast. It will be even more so once 2.2 is released. I'm glad it's finally getting some recognition now though. There was virtually no hype for this phone and it's probably one of the better android devices to come out this fall, all things considered.

Well.. seeing as I'm on at&t this phone suits ALL of my criteria.

A. its not an at&t phone.. so no data plan for me.
B. It does have 850 at&t 3g band, so I can still get mms without waiting all day.
C. ITS FREAKEN WATER RESISTANT. I have washed 2 phones in my life. One was a cheap dumbphone.. and the other was a freak accident wiht my e71x.. I normally never left it in my pants pocket but, I had a slight emergency one day so it got left in my pants..

Besides the washer, I live in louisiana.. it can look like it going to rain all day and never rain a drop... Or it can look like its going to rain.. pour down hard while I'm 10 minutes away from the nearest building on campus..

I am always worried about water damage to my phones when that happens... So.. it will be nice to not have to worry about the phone for once and be able to be more worried about myself in the rain..

Aside from that.. watching a few reviews.. I noticed the odd complaint it can be slow when booting.. just like everything else in the world. After a certain age no one springs out of bed going "OH MAH GOD LOOK AT THE DAY!"

However, for what its worth the defy comes packed with features. has more than enough power from what I can see to handle them all..

Just because it doesn't have 90 million triangles a second doesn't mean its not a great and with all respects high end phone..

If "high end cars" were limited to the 2 at the top.. we would only see the Bugatti Veyron and SSC Aero as the "high end".

That leaves out porsche, ferrari, lamborgini, and others.

And even those could be considered the "extreme high end".

I mean.. the Nissan 370z is higher end than most people will ever own in terms of performance..

I just don't understand what it takes to be "high end" in the phone world though. You would think having great software with relatively little problems from the get go would be one of the major selling points of any android device.

Look at all the problems all the other phones have, not even limited to android..
