App to locate lost phone

Hi

I recently lost my phone, and had an app on it that texted me the location. Unfortunately I was overseas and didn't get the phone back, but it was a good little app - but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it or find it in the market.

The exact fucntionality was that when a different sim card is put in the phone, it preiodically sends you 3 texts with the location of the phone by cell tower, GPS and another (WPS I think?) format. So you get a rough location and also the phone number of the person with the phone. Handy...

Anyone got an idea of what this app was called? It's not Wavesecure, Lookout (which totally failed to locate the phone or restore the backups - rubbish), Where's My Droid...

As I say, done an extensive web and market search and can't find it anywhere

Any help much appreciated.

Hey,

I don't know if you're still looking for an app for this, I see that the person above me has submitted a startlingly extensive list, but I wanted to just offer that there is an app for which I am part developer for, that might do you well.

It's called "Fone Phinder" (see what we did there?)

You can find it on the Android Market on your phone if you search "mtr", that's our production company name. This will give you a map to find your phone, and give you the selection of your secret code, and your own ringtone. Believe it or not, I've used it myself at least twice in "real life" when I thought I lost my phone, to find it in the same drawer, both times.

GPS Tracker is good too. Send a text to your lost phone and it will enable your GPS so you can locate it via Google Maps from a PC.

Can't be beat. I have it set up so that I can send it a SMS from any phone and it returns GPS location, or if I do not have a phone I just log into Google Voice from a computer and send an SMS from there.

I can also sound an alarm on my phone so I can hear it to find it.

That is just the beginning, Tasker does sooo much more, easily the best app I have bought

The fone phinder app is going to start running via Server, so it should solve any issues with clogging SMS, viewable or otherwise, it will also make the app run faster and smoother, which will in turn waste less battery on the phone.

Thanks for all the replies, but it's none of those - weird, just can't find it

I use Lookout but find it pretty unreliable, backup works but it failed to restore it to my new phone, and it never locates the phone when I test it out

Wavesecure looks great but don't really want to pay a sub

Tasker looks excellent but pretty involved setup for whatever you want it to do - would rather just have an app. But will try it for things like lost phone, battery saving etc

Any other suggestions gratefully received

I concur that lookout is good but I don't like that it sits in the notification bar, but there might be a way to turn off the permanent icon. Wavesecure is very popular for other platforms but I'm not as into their android solution.

Yes, you can turn off the Lookout icon from the notification bar.

Looks like they've gone to a closed beta for a while so I guess that's why it's gone missing. Looks like a pretty sweet app

Theft Aware? Recently bought by Avast.

Can't post links yet, but there's a review on Android Police. Some of the top features:

• (root) TA installs itself into the system partition, even on phones with NAND protection, meaning it will not be affected by even full system wipes/resets. The only way to get TA off the phone is by deleting the app via adb, if you know exactly what you're looking for (more on this later), or by flashing a new ROM.
• (root) I never thought I'd say this, but phones with locked NAND, like the EVO 4G, actually benefit from the read-only nature of their system partition - in this case, the only way to remove Theft Aware is by doing so from recovery via adb.
• (root) That's right - TA can install itself using the update.zip method - the same method used by the OS to upgrade itself. The app generates and signs a custom update.zip package on the fly during installation or writing secure settings. Can you say "brilliant?"
• (root) Moreover, it detects and integrates with ROM Manager to make installation (i.e. flashing the update.zip) a snap.
• (root) The app is completely invisible not just in the app launcher (any app can do that already), but also in the app manager (Settings > Applications > Manage).
• (root) Moreover, if a thief starts Theft Aware and finds it in the "currently running apps" section of the app manager, he or she will not only fail to uninstall it (see above for why), but also won't be able to delete any of its settings by pressing "Clear Data" - all settings are written to /system the same way as the app itself and are wipe-proof.
