Root S Off. I'm bored!

I've decided to give S off a go as I've been a little bored all day, I've spent many hours reading about it and even longer getting around the unfamiliar Windows Java, SDK and the rest. I think I'm now ready to FASTBOOT, the tutorial I'm using tell me there's a million tutorials for it. If there is, someone has spent all weekend deleting then because I can't find any.

Can anybody link me to a comprehensive S off or even FASTBOOT tutorial?

I know how daunting it all sounds but I actually found S-off to be the easier than rooting.

I assume you have read these tutorials --> here

I also assume you are on windows.

Because my winXP laptop has a broken cd\dvd drive, I used the third option but instead of "VMware" (which I couldn't find a easy download for), I used "VMware player" from filehippo --> here.
It was very slighty different to the voyager tutorial but with the player version, there is no need to unplug and plug usb during the process, it does if for you.
After downloading vmware player and the alpharev iso, I think it took me about 10 minutes to s-off.

Happy modding your desi

If you don't know what it does, then you probably don't need it.

But the main thing is that you can delete system/apps whilst android is running with certain apps. Of course this can be dangerous if you remove the wrong things.

You can also set up custom partition layouts so you can resize the /system and /cache partitions, giving /data a bigger space (more apps)

/system is 250MB, but for cyanogen or any other vanilla rom, you can get away with half that space.

When I used to have custom layouts, I have 300MB /data partition - over double what it comes with as standard.

cheers dan,

I guess the only reason i'd ever use S-Off in that case is to make way for more apps but i'm not exactly short of room atm so it's not really worth my while.

I'll wait till there's an easy guide as to what can be changed safely before i play about with anything then :p

Btw, fancy sharing your secrets as to how you're hitting 2.5k+ on quadrant? :p i'm running DefroST 6.1 too but only getting around 1700 :(

That's exactly what I intend to do. I'm running darktremor as my a2sd and I'm getting low mem warning even though I'm nowhere near full. I've tried DeFrost but I prefer Cyanogen, I will be nicking the FM Radio from the DeFrost rom though, as soon as I work out what files to take with it. The other thing that's happening with DeFrost is that the memory meters on Titanium Pro have all gone!

I seem to remember when I rooted that I needed sdk, Java and all sorts, but after your post last night Dan I googled ".iso s off" and a whole new epoch of reading appeared before me. Luckily an inch and a half of snow means that work is unthinkable so I have plenty of time on my hands.

Thanks everyone.................I may be gone for some time! :)

Mine are still there.

yeah when I was on a2sd+, I found I needed to relayout my partitions too. Well not so much needed, but had to do it for the kick ;)

I'm getting to know the feeling! :)

I'm back on Cyanogen and still have the low mem warning even though I no where near the limit! I'm not rushing into moving internal partitions until I'm comfortable and done a lot more reading. Any ideas on what I can do about it?

Next step after apps2sd+ is partition or data2sd.

Partition has been around longer. Pretty stable
