Help Android Market - Alarm Service.

I finally got the latest version of the Android Market app last week. I happened to check my running applications in Settings and I noticed a process called AlarmService under com.android.vending.

It seems to use up about 9 MB of RAM and is constantly running in the background. Does anyone know what this process is for? I noticed that my battery life has seemed a little worse for wear since the new Android Market was installed. It is by no means horribly degraded, but a bit lower than the norm.

Well, I looked at my running services again today and noticed that it was still there. Later on, I was in the Android Market and it force closed for some reason and now that process is not running anymore.

I do not really know if that process is specifically to check for updates because I got the notification for an update even when that process was not running. I am sort of at a loss for what it does.

From what I've read, it seems to be part of the android system that initiates when apps are scheduled to perform a task such as checking email, alarm clocks and so fourth. Here is a brief quote from a developers post ...

* This demonstrates how you can schedule an alarm that causes a service to
* be started. This is useful when you want to schedule alarms that initiate
* long-running operations, such as retrieving recent e-mails.

Jrocker you rock! I was looking for a confirm to what I thought the Alarm Service was that kept kicking off on my Dell Streak. Scanning the forum and reading your January 2011 log, it confirmed what I thought.

I had instlled a scheduler app to turn things on and off within a few minutes of each execution (for testing) and was getting the AlarmService process going on just a few minutes after i force closed it. Then when i was done with the scheduler app, the alarm services stopped kicking off as quick as before.

Thanks!!
