Help with new phone: Captivate or hold out for infuse, atrix, etc...

I know there are a few posts out there similar to this, but I'm looking for all the help I can get.

Our contracts are almost up and we are in need of better phones...I plan to stick with AT&T...

I'm considering the Captivate, since with the upcoming release of the Atrix, Infuse, and Inspire...the priceof a Captivate is now free or a penny on Wirefly/Amazon...with a 2yr contract..

I don't need the newest, fastest phone out there but would like an android that will last another contract...with 4G not in all areas and dual core being new to phones...should I get caught up in the hype of the new releases? or stick w/ the good deal?

I'd like to be able to root/customize phone a bit, even though I'm new to it....

Seems like the price is right on the Captivate, or would it be worth to pay more ....the Infuse and Galaxy S2 sound great...

Welcome to the forums.

I have heard good things about the captivate, and some not so good. The not so good I have heard for one, probably the most major, is that as far as I know, none of the GPS modules in any of the Galaxy S phones (including the captivate) work properly. This has kept me from getting one myself as I use GPS fairly often while driving.

If you don't need GPS then it probably doesn't matter. I would browse the Captivate forum here though and take a look at other people's issues/reports/or praises. If the price is right and the phone sounds right for you, go for it.

I'm personally waiting for something newer, and also I need a working GPS of course. lol.

well, I would like the GPS to work...both myself and my wife would use it quite a bit...

so even with an update/rooting the phone...the GPS is still an issue?

So, if the Galaxy S phones have problems with GPS...should be worry about that with the new Infuse?

As far as I know, the updates helped a little bit, but it isn't 100%. I believe it has issues with accuracy. People say it's a hardware issue. I can't say if it would be an issue with the new Samsung phones but if I were you I'd wait (as hard as it is) till people have these phones and you can read their feedback on the forums.

I've been stuck on an HTC Hero watching numerous new phones come out that I have to bypass for one reason or another. I'm waiting for something that will truly be exactly what I am looking for and worth the money.

The Atrix looks amazing, but moto likes to make modding difficult with locked bootloaders and such. Will have to wait and see if that is the case here too.

Bottom line. If I were you I'd hold out a little while longer.

well, that's what I'm trying to do...is wait....

seems like the new phones should be out in less than a month or so...and we have a couple months left on the contract...so that works out well, but it's hard

Yeah it's hard to wait but look at it this way, you got little to gain and nothing to lose at this point, at least until that next wave of new devices is finally released.

Every day my HTC Hero seems slower and slower but I'm really trying hard to refrain from buying something I won't be 100% happy with (or at least 95% ) lol.

Just depends if you don't mind flashing a custom ROM. I'm using a stock Cognition 3.04 ROM that updated my phone to Froyo 2.2 and fixed the GPS issue among other things.
In all honesty I would steer clear of any Samsung phones. There are millions of Galaxy S phones in the US alone and Samsung has been promising an update to the Android OS for months (Like 6 of them).

I love the phone but probably won't buy another Samsung device. Luckily the people that develop the ROMs, Kernels and Modems are a great bunch and love doing it. I would have taken this phone back to AT&T if I hadn't discovered the beauty of Rooting and ROMing an Android device.

I love my Captivate but only because I've found a stable release to upgrade it with.

Whatever you pick you will probably enjoy it. I'll never go back to the iPhone again.
