I do not want to root my Eris because I merely have no need to other than for wireless tethering. Surely there is a way to wirelessly tether and use the phone as a hotspot without rooting? Does anybody know, cause having to plug the phone in to tether is annoying beyond belief. Help?

always check the stickies

I've used both methods, and there are also tutorials on flashing. It may seem like a lot of work, but if you're unhappy with the performance of your phone its worth a try if you're not eligible to upgrade yet.

unrooting and flashing back is pretty easy, but from what I hear most people don't even bother.

Rooted. Now what? any good stuff to do.with a rooted Eris? Anything good to flash?

If you duct tape it to the bottom of one shoe, then jump off something really high, a rooted Eris will transition to rocket booster mode and you can fly!! :D

On a serious note - many people seem to be recommending CELB Froyo:
[ROM][GPL] CELB Froyo 4.3(Plain CM Rom)1-21-11 - xda-developers

I personally am running Floyo, and find it performs quite well for me:
[ROM]Floyo Tazz 5 1/14/11/mui music/gb keyboard - xda-developers

And some others are listed here:

And of course, you can now wireless tether.

"froyo" is android 2.2. celb, froshed, etc, are different froyo ROMs. xtr, for example, is a 2.1 rom.

I always end up coming back to 2.1 (mainly xtr) no matter what I try. There always seem to be issues with 2.2, however celb is pretty great.

1)boot recovery (clockwork or amon)
2)backup
3)wipe
4)flash
5)horray?

see this post for flashing/wiping instructions (illustrated) credit to eu1. in fig.40 you'll simply click on the .zip of whatever rom you downloaded.

in case anything goes wrong, simply boot recovery, wipe, and reflash your backup. its pretty much foolproof.
