No, the pre-order was only for Verizon customers and got shut down after 17hrs.

Up until today, you couldn't order the iPhone from anywhere else, even if you were a Verizon customer.

Perhaps the lines aren't as long because Apple has a history of having plenty of product available at launch. Where Motorola shipped only a few DXs to each store. You were basically lucky to get one, or determined to stand in a long line.

As to why people would even want an iPhone, that I'll never understand. Don't know why people are so willing to accept control. It's not a bad device. Hardware wise it's close to that of many other current phones. But that locked eco-system kills it for me.

Wait, I guess we are talking about the masses who were too completely inept to set the time on thier VCR, so maybe now I understand the typical Apple consumer.

I pre-ordered an iphone and got it on Monday. I had to do it because I had always wanted one. After playing with it for 3 days, I sent it back and am now "bought in" to my Droid X and whatever Moto Droid comes next.

Here are the things I like better about my X over the iphone:
1) Widgets. I love having the weather and radar on my home screens. I don't have to press a button to learn what the weather is doing.
2) Screen size and presentation. I am not 20 something and I really did not like occasionally having to put on my glasses to read the iphone. You can change a lot of font sizes, but not all. e.g. when you are typing a text, there is no way to change that font. Part of it is presentation: there are frequent occasions where they use light gray text on a white background. This, too, requires glasses.
3) Voice texting. You can voice text on iphone, but you have to go to the Dragon app, dictate, copy, and then paste to the texting app. If you are replying to a text, it is certainly not seamless. When I read reviews of Android vs. iphone, I am always amazed that voice texting is rarely mentioned.
4) Google voice commands. I love being able to say something and Google looks it up, navigates to it or finds me a phone number.
5) Turn by turn navigation: You can get this on iphone, but you will pay $50 or more.
6) Replaceable battery: I work long hours and don't really have time to be tethered to a wall while I recharge an iphone. I take an extra battery to work and swap it out if needed.

My guess is that part of the reason lines were short to purchase a new iPhone is that, in much of the nation, it was 20-30 degrees this morning. I can't speak for anyone but myself but it would take a lot to motivate me to stand outside in 20 degree weather to pick up an iPhone.

And anyway I'm thinking a lot of Verizon subscribers are waiting for the iPhone 5 to come out later in the year. Why buy a iPhone 4 in February when you know that the iPhone 5 (with LTE) will likely hit the streets later this year?

IMO...I doubt the iPhone 5 will feature LTE. If anything it will have a dual-mode chip and some slight tweaks.

As for the short lines of the VZW iPhone 4...I'm not surprised at all. The timing is not the best, but atleast it's finally on VZW.

Which Android device did you switch over to the iPhone from? I liked hearing about the Android strengths, now that you've established you prefer Android, I (if no one else) would love to hear some of the strengths of the iPhone compared to your Android devices. What were the qualities you did like? What areas do you think Android could/should work on in order to match some of those strengths? And what was it that drew you to the iPhone that you felt you just had to have it when it came to Verizon?

I hope to hear from more like you now that the iPhone is on Verizon and it's a more apples to apples comparison (no pun intended... I just meant now they can't blame dropped calls on AT&T if it still demonstrates that problem). What I'm most interested in is... was it a HUGE disappointment in your opinion? Like after 3 days were you just like, "what the ****"??? Or was it a very, VERY close call, and it basically just came down to splitting hairs? Like if you had started out on an iPhone from the very beginning and then tried to switch over to Android do you think the scenario would have played out similarly, and the familiarity with the iOS would have taken you back to what was comfortable? Or do you feel for you personally Android was always what you were destined to end up with?

Please feel free to answer frankly. I for one am completely neutral in this conflict, and while I own and love my DX, I acknowledge Apples validity as a competitor. And I'm not alone here in that position.

Verizon iPhone lines were short because of a few reasons most of which were mentioned above.

1. The iPhone 4 is a 6+ month old phone already, you can't ever think it reasonable to compare a new carrier option to a new phone launch in terms of expected lines and hype and such. If the Evo launched tomorrow on Verizon there would be nothing but tumbleweeds.

2. Verizon's online order system was very robust. People didn't need to go out and stand in line like they did with the AT&T launch.

3. Verizon has several phones that are iPhone 4 caliber and arguably better and have already been sold in significant quantities. AT&T did not at the time of the iPhone 4 launch.

Yup, cause my wife got up at 2:45 AM the other day to buy one. She tried it at 2:50 AM and it let her transaction go through... worked perfectly and she didn't experience any of the problems that was reported by other folks. Guess she was lucky that they opened the ordering a few minutes early and she thought to try it... she was reluctant to get up that early and I told her that if she didn't, she probably wouldn't get one. And that was confirmed the next day. She likes her iPhone a lot, much more than her BlackBerry Storm 2, but I am LOVING my Droid X.

I don't know about you but I was never able to preorder my Droid(s) so saying it beat preorder records doesn't say very much.

What I mean is that the 2 hours worth of preorders of the Verizon iPhone beat out the single day sales record, which includes launch days, of any Verizon phone. That's quite significant since it was from 3AM-5AM EST on a work day.
