I recently rooted my LG optimus M and deleted alot of the bloatware. I am now having trouble with the navigation, places and metro/android store icons. It seems to be an issue with the phone not being able to detect location using satellite. As well I am unable to download pictures or video from web. I called metro and they reset the phone but this did nothing. Did I accidently delete something that was needed? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Data is working I can get online but I when I click the following icons they do not work: Places, Google Navigation, Metro App, Android App, its says your location could not be found or something along those lines.... As well I tried to download some pics from online and that doesnt work either. Also I just noticed the voice icon on the text messaging screen doesnt work either....

I am going to find a hotspot to see if it makes a difference, otherwise the plan was to go to the corporate metro store, but those guys dont seem to know anything...

REALLY? What did you delete? Did you go by the safe to delete list, or did you just go through the phone and decide willy nilly what was "bloatware"?

This is a Linux hand held computer. You don't just go through and delete stuff without knowing what is safe to delete.

Do me a favor and go through the Windows subfolder on your PC and delete everything in there you don't think you need. :p

Quick question: is that something you get from the app store because I cannot access app store or is there another link for it. Also I just noticed that the voice app doesnt work for text either.. Thanks...

Bet you deleted browser.apk and/or talk.apk.

Here's why you should not remove talk:

I delete gtalkservices.apk, and now I can't download by Android Market, how can I fix it? - Android Market Help

.....wait, why cant you access the app store, might I ask? you might have another problem on your hand.....

Exactly.

Have you rooted your phone? If so then you should have a Nand backup that you can fall back on.... If not then just reinstall the rom and you should be fine....

Why would he have a Nand backup ? It's not something that is present on the phone just because it's rooted. I don't have one. I use Titanium Backup.

No, he's going to have to restore the phone to factory condition using external software on his computer, like the Andyo70's LGNST files -- and connecting his PC to his phone via USB cable. I did that, but because I had Titanium backup I was able to then go back and restore accounts and apps after factory condition was achieved.

of all the apps you can delete, here's the only ones you should delete if you want:

These apps can safely be removed from the LG Optimus M.

Apps safe to remove:

  • Boingo_Wi-Fi.apk - Boingo WiFi
  • Email.apk - Email app - Safe to remove if you use Gmail or some other email app
  • LG-MS690_MetroBackup_1.27_PRODBuild_10082010.apk - MetroBackup
  • LGMS690_MetroNavigator_4.9.1_Build_57_10222010_rel_signed_PROD.apk - MetroNavigator
  • LGMS690_MetroPCS_EasyWiFi_V4.0.90.apk - EasyWiFi (useful, don't delete. that's my opinion. /ChazzMatt)
  • Loopt_Android_2.4.1_Oct.13.2010.apk - Loopt
  • Metro411.apk - Metro411
  • metroappstore-v1.3a.apk - MetroPCS App Store
  • MobileBanking.apk - Mobile Banking
  • MobilePosse.apk - MyExtras
  • Mocospace-1.2.4.apk - Moco Space
  • MPCS-MobileIM-0.4.24.2.apk - MobileIM
  • MVC.MetroPCS.android02.apk - Virtual Card
  • PEX-3.1.1.1-metro-rc.apk - Pocket Express
  • PGA_Android.apk - Games
  • SNS.apk - LG Facebook and Twitter app
  • thinkdroid.apk - Think Free Office (potentially useful, don't delete)
  • UNO_DEMO_LG_MS690_EN_NONIGP_MetroPCs_TS_307.apk - UNO Game
  • z7-android2x.apk - Mail@Metro

These apps SHOULD NOT be removed:

  • Browser.apk (and .odex) - MetroWEB - Required for Android Market
  • Phone.apk - Phone app/dialer
  • Settings.apk - Settings menu
  • Talk.apk - Google Talk

You start removing Android stuff like calculator or calendar, that's not really bloatware, that is part of the Android OS. Maybe you can remove it but it's best just to focus on the extra stuff that Metro put on and leave Android stuff alone.

I also heard removing LG home can cause problems even if you use an alternate launcher.

Possibly. I wouldn't remove it. I would only remove the ones on the list I posted just above here. They are actually safe.

It's just I've seen this before over in a Windows forum where people were modifying XP, trying to strip it down. Yes, you can remove a few things, but you get to the point where you risk damaging the operating system. I actually used one of those stripped down OS'es and gave them to friends too. But I saw lots of major car crashes from people who didn't know what they were doing.

People get a fever and don't understand some software they might not use is actually related to OTHER software they need. "I don't need browser.apk, I've installed my own alternate browser." Sorry, you DO need it for the phone to work right.
