any idea when Droid x will be updated, I have version 2.1

You should be on 2.2.1 (Froyo) by now...

Launch Settings -> About phone -> System Updates to see if you have an update available (which you should unless you've rooted and disabled receiving OTA updates).

Not sure why you wouldn't have already updated or been notified that an update was available...

Since you don't seem to have the update, let us know what error you get when checking for updates.

Also, Settings... about phone. What numbers do you have there for kernel version?

I don't remember (or really know) if one could have put off the OTA update indefinitely (I know for me, it paused 12 hours after my first notification and then auto-updated while I was at lunch ).

You don't suppose that VZW has not stopped pushing-out the OTA do you? If they have, the OP could probably take it to VZW and have them update it. Or, if you're rooted, there's lots of options, eh? ;)

One could only assume the op was rooted and something they did block the update since almost everone I have seen or heard that wasn't was forced the update as you were ....but as we all know stranger things have happened

Yeah, I was rooted, but didn't take any counter-measures against getting the update ;) [but I did want to watch it happening...I was a little surprised (but not shocked) when I turned my phone on after returning from lunch only to find the lockscreen looked a little bit different :D].

rooting will give you "super user " capabilities to intall and manipulate your device through custom roms or overclocking etc ,,,it is a gateway ,,,an addictive one lol

Rooting lets you do just about anything to your phone. You can install/uninstall things that aren't normally possible and change the appearance to any color, any icons, etc. You can also trash your phone if you're careless, but that why we get paid the big bucks to bail you out.
