Root How to install ICARUS 1.1 by Isaacj87

Hi there everyone,
I have a couple of issues.
#1 at the beginning, after I first put icarus on my phone, everytime I would hit the end button, my phone would tell me I had 2 choices to make. I accidently hit default blah blah and now it's automatically on launcher pro. How can I get it to give me the choices of what home screen I want to go to?
#2 My navigation system does not work anymore. It only states "searching for location, and then it would never get there. If someone could help me out I would truly appreciate it! Thanks!

Are we going to give up hope for the helpless mac users? Just wondering if I'll need to ask my friend to borrow his pc or not...

I've tried what I can, but mac seems hit or miss alot.
I forgot how exactly but my brother disabled the option that automaticly unzips files but cwm still only works for me on windows.

1. Menu, apps, manage apps, lp, scroll down and clear defaults.

2. Turn gps on.

THANKS ISAAC! I totally understand the logic of the MMS having to go out on the 3G...I just seem to remember (On the stock ROM???) sending MMS with Wi-Fi turned on.

I am assuming in that case that the message, "Works around" the wi fi and sneaks out on the 3G, is that possible?

The only other alternative is me not noticing they were not sending until I went to 3G off Wifi, which is doubtful, since it spends 90% of it's time on wi-fi. So there must have been a path for the MMS to get out.

Now on Icarus, it appears that wifi has to be off completely. Which is a very very small issue. I'll have to experiment a little, but any ideas on work arounds I'd love to hear...but sounds pretty cut and dry.

I really do appreciate the info....I was unaware, and that was very helpful!
Thanks!
Jeff

Your Mac, under the hood, is essentially a powerful unix workstation. Doing things on a Mac is much like doing things on Linux - and Android is Linux - so, your Mac is not the odd man out here by any means.

Read thru these instructions before following.

1. You will never need USB drivers for your Mac. You're already good to go.

2. If you can connect your phone to your Mac's USB port (any will do), set it disk drive mode on the phone when you plug in, and see it appear the same as you would any USB drive - you're good to go.

3. In the instructions, where it says to download CWM Recovery.zip - do that. You should end up with the zip and a folder called CWM Recovery in your Downloads folder (unless you've modified your browser preferences, that's where your downloads will be) - find that under your account name in the left-side of the Finder.

4. Create a folder under Documents called AscendTools - (don't improvise, please, no spaces, just exactly do as I've named it) - drag both the zip and the CWM Recovery folder to that AscendTools folder. This is for your safekeeping - I never mod a phone without putting my downloads into a safe folder, and never let this kind of stuff clutter up the Download folder.

If you only have the zip file on Download, don't sweat it - your browser was set to not process zip files. Just drag the zip to the AscendTools folder and then double-click it.

If you do have the zip file left behind by browser, stop now and do this if using Safari:

Safari (top-left menubar) -> Preferences -> General (leftmost) -> Uncheck 'Open "Safe" files after downloading"

5. Download everything first in the instructions and move to AscendTools folder. You do not want to be half way through this and then find you can't get to some file you need.

6. Create a folder under AscendTools called SDbackup.

Copy/paste your entire SD card to SDbackup.

Under SDbackup - delete the file/folder named LOST.DIR

7. First thing you'll need on the Mac side, now that you have all of your files downloaded and are ready to go is a unix terminal console window: Finder -> Applications -> Utilities (folder) -> Terminal (launch that)

From now on, we'll call it the terminal.

8. You're now seeing a white window with a command-line prompt that's going to look like this, only with your date, computer and username (don't worry about the ttys stuff):

Code:
Last login: Thu Feb 3 13:56:34 on ttys003
sunrise:~ earlymon$ _
9. I want to you copy and paste this into that window - if you followed my instructions, this will work just fine:

Code:
cd $HOME/Documents/AscendTools/CWM\ Recovery
Hit return.

If you followed previous instructions, your screen will now say (again - this is my machine and username):

Code:
sunrise:CWM Recovery earlymon$ _
10. Instructions say:

Find and Run the fastboot- file according to your OS.
Copy and paste this into the terminal:

Code:
./fastboot-mac
Hit return.

You will not get a transient black window as the instructions on page one indicate - that's a Windows deal.

11. Instructions say:
Then Run the install-recovery- file according to your OS.
Copy and paste this into the terminal:

Code:
./install-recovery-mac.sh
Hit return.

12. Instructions say:

1) Download Icarus via the link below.

- Place it in the
MAIN folder of your SDcard
Ok - if you have a zip and a folder for Icarus - trash the folder, drag the zip from your Downloads folder to that AscendTools folder.

Next - drag it to the main level of your phone appearing as a USB drive, the SD card should be appearing as the top level (what Windows people call the Main folder).

Most phones pre-create standard directories when formatting the SD card from the phone. Obviously, not owning an Ascend, I can't be sure - but if it does, you'll have a folder named DCIM - and DCIM is at the top level of the SD card, if there's confusion.

(Provided your phone only mounts the SD card, the top level is the one you'll see in the Finder, when selecting the phone/SD in the left panel when using the standard 3-panel Finder view (icon at top of Finder window.)

In fact - if the Ascend is following std Android protocols - on the left-most side of your Finder, you'll see your phone mounted as disk drive called NO NAME.

NOW!! ;)

Time for a dry run.

Make the folders, do the backups, do the downloads, launch a Terminal window, go as far as the cd command in Step 9.

If you see the prompt I indicate, you're ready to go back to page one, and follow the detailed steps in order, just copy in the magic from here where required.

~~~~
Everyone usually tells me this is all very straightforward after doing it just once.
Don't be afraid to ask questions. Be very comfy with this before proceeding.
Hope this helps. ;)
OK, I will do it today!!!!
One quick question: do we need to reinstall apps that we used on rooted phone. apps like SetCPU, Juicedefender etc. Or we don't need them anymore?
When you install this rom all of your apps and all your other data will be gone. Its as if your replacing the phone all over again although the market will realize which apps you already paid for, your phone number that kind of thing. Set CPU you cannot use because this rom is not overclockable. Juice Defender you can use of you like, the battery life is pretty much what it was before.
this is not completely true...
if you have titanium backup (titbu is what i call it here) you can back up all user apps and easily reinstall them after you flash.
open titbu,
center tab,
physical menu key,
batch,
back up all user apps.
save the "titaniumbackup" folder on your sd to your computer.
after flash d/ld titbu (free) and get back to batch menu,
run "restore missing apps with data"
"Once it is done, unplug USB cable and take out the battery for 10 seconds and try to get into recovery by turning phone off and pressing and holding Volume Up, Call key, and Power until the black Clockwork screen comes out."
I unplugged the USB cable with my phone still on (Hauwei symbol showing). It
says to take the battery out but nothing about powering it down first. Do I just take the battery out and do I need to power it off first. Don't want to brick my phone by pulling out the battery at the wrong time.
Hello everyone. I've been lurking for a few weeks but this is my first post.
Thank you so much to everyone who was involved in troubleshooting the MMS and other issues, a very big help for me.
I had the same MMS issue everyone else did, but I re-flashed with 1.1, changed the APN and all is well...
New issue on my end. The date is correct, however my time zone won't auto correct. The phone thinks its in the mountains when in fact its in Florida, lol.
Also my old apps wont install from the market! Its still loading the old market for now, and when I download my apps I get "installation unsuccessful" almost immediately after the download is complete.
I apologize if these issues have been resolved, but I searched and searched and found nothing. Thanks for your help in advance.
BTW: GREAT job on Icarus! I'm very pleased and cannot wait to show off at work tomorrow, lol.
for the apps-
hopefully you have backups with titbu but even if not do this.
1 save contacts to sd and (backup user apps with titbu.)
2 unmount and remove memory card (menu, settings,sd card & phone storage, unmount)
3 factory reset (menu, settings, privacy, factory reset)
4 after reboot open market, close it, wait for a little, check back till market looks different.
reinser sd card and d/ld apps. (restore titbu backed up apps)
if you have trouble with apps to sd look in apps2sd trouble.
Well the other day I decide just to go for it and installed icarus 1.1 for my metro pcs ascend. was pretty easy. but when I got to the part to install the zip file from sd card I allready zipped it. so it wouldnt show up. I was nervous but ended up putting zip on there restarting phone started over . with clearing everything and it unzipped perfectly no problems. I am very inpressed with icarus. My wife has lg optimus m and her phone works great and I was jelous how fast and smooth hers runs with 2.2. My ascend is over clocked and whatever crashed all the time. was choppy. pissed me off. but after I installed icarus. oh man my phone rocks. works better then hers for some things. I am so happy. runs smotth games run a 1000 times smotther and faster. everything seems to work fine. Deffinetly recommend icarus 1.1. you wont regret it. Thanks for all the info here. well goto go wife is made im on her. as usual.. lol. ;)
Thank you very much! Trying it now. Ill post the results a little later. Take care.
See my post on what that means for Mac users, above.
Short answer is no - that's the same as the top level - parallel to the folders you normally see on you SD card.
