Help Rooting and Tethering using 4G LTE?

Hi All

I am currently using my Rooted Droid Eris and using the Wireless Tether App every now and then when needed.

I am curious to know that if and when the Thunderbolt and other 4G devices come out, if Verizon will be able to see the fact that you are "Unofficially" wireless tethering your 4G plan with this new technology?

Or will it be like the current 3G where they really cannot tell that you are tethered?

Can anyone advise?

I had an advanced CS Rep from VZW on the phone with me the other day about something different then the T-Bolt. I tried turning the conversation to questions on the thunderbolt and she surprised me with how much she knew about what was going on.

She told me that she had no idea what the exact date would be only that it would be soon and sometime in March.

She also told and this was without my asking that the wifi hotspot feature will be free, until through the end of may or June depending on when they got it out and than it would go back to standard $20 a month for 2 gigs.

She sounded quite up on everything going on and did not seem to make stuff up for what she did not have answers to.

Considering they charge for tethering with other phones, I can't imagine them not charging to tether 4G, especially since the amount of bandwidth available on 4G. People are more likely to use it for large data transfers.

I think this is why Verizon seems to be leaning towards charging for large data transfers. They've already begun to indicate that they will throttle large data users.

I think Verizon is going to move to a pricing model where you pay based on quantity of data, not speed of data (unlike AT&T). I can't remember where, but I think it was CES where Verizon made some big announcements regarding 4g/LTE that they answered a question from the audience regarding pricing for 4g; and the lady said that they weren't making a change right now; but that they were going to move towards a model of charging for quantity, not speed.

So, in that case I think Verizon is thinking in a bigger picture - it doesn't matter how you are using the data (tethering, smartphone, laptop, or even phone calls); but how MUCH data you are using.

That is why I wouldn't be surprised to see Verizon just include tethering in the package. And there have been some hints that there might be some "surprise features" when the thunderbolt finally drops ...

This is why I want to jump over to Verizon and get grandfathered into unlimited 4G data.

I really hope you can use tethering options. But understand that lte can and will be able to block specific apps, websites, and even data flows. The network will just not let the tethering app connect with the network.

If verizon chooses and even if you root, you will not be able to tether with out a tethering plan. LTE only. 3g will work normally.

is this function not built in to the 3g network for carriers to allow them to block unauthorized use?---or are they looking the other way at this point

No, it is not available with 3g. It is available with lte.

When you install an app, the lte sim can check the app against a list of apps on the server.

Here is some reading materials.
