Help Automatic converts text message to multimedia message?

I just got my Mesmerize over the weekend so I'm still getting a solid feel for it. But this just has me very confused.

If I am composing a text message and I reach the character limit per message, rather than just adjusting so that multiple message will be sent, my phone automatically converts the message into a multimedia message. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but many of the people I commonly text with cannot receive multimedia messages.

Does anyone know if there is a setting I need to change? Or is there some other means of fixing/changing this?

Your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!

I have the same issue. If anyone knows of a 3rd party app or some way to change the text messaging system that comes with it to parse the messages instead of sending multimedia messages that would be helpful. Will handcent still allow me to use swype like the stock app?

P.S. nate dogg from the warren g album back in the day stroked out and died...RIP, Homie.

CG...are you running a fever? Did you fall and hit your head on a rock? Just wondering, because you asked a real question that we can actually help you resolve!

Are you sure you don't wanna take a moment and blame US Cellular, Samsung, and/or the United Nations for this problem before we help you? :D

I refer to Handcent because its the only one I've used so far. (It works great, its free, it lets me tweak all the stuff I need to tweak, so why bother downloading the others) Chomp and GO are two others I looked at briefly but did not test.

Handcent will let you tweak the settings on SMS, MMS, and a variety of other features. You can also download custom fonts and themes if you are so inclined.

It will let you choose the "sent" message settings to your liking, including a "Split 160" feature for those of us on the USCC CDMA network.

Thanks LaTuFu! I really appreciate the help!

I briefly looked at handcent. I understand that installing that to my Mesmerize will override my factory SMS/MMS client that comes on the phone. I just want to make sure, that if I end up unhappy with it, that I will be able to uninstall it and the phone revert back to the factory system by default. Are the interface and appearance generally the same to the stock system? How has your experience with handcent been?

Yes, you can uninstall Handcent and it will go back to the stock messaging app. All you do, the first time you use it, is check off "use this application as default" and select Handcent SMS, and you're good to go. If you decide to go back to the stock app, when you uninstall Handcent it will revert to the stock.

I like Handcent a lot. It is much better than the stock app, IMO. You can customize every setting you can imagine. Text font, size, color, background image, etc. You can also customize notifications and message handling to a much greater degree than the stock app allows. It handles MMS much better, too. I have no plans to switch back.
