Help CPU Utilization

Hi Experts,

I am new to the forum and need your expert guidance..

I am using Samsung Galaxy S with version 2.2 since past 3 months. Although I love the phone, am facing problems with respect to lag/reboot/force shutdown of applications..

I have installed a number of applications (about 55) which I dont know if is high or low as compared to others.

The problem I am facing is that of phone hangs quite often. I have installed Elixir widget to monitor the CPU utilization. I have noticed that the CPU utilization often shoots up to 100% even when no applications(3rd party) are being used. Phone reboots quite often and force shutdown of application is a common thing.

I want to understand what could be the problem and how I can fix this..Will factory resetting help? Will rooting help (dont know too much about it)?

Any advice will be most appreciated..

Hello and welcome to the forums, reachnd.

You state the reason for your device's issues when you tell us you've installed 55 or more apps. Some of those issues are likely caused by background updating apps/widgets, and some portion of the problems likely arise from too much syncing going on simultaneously.

You have a daunting regimen ahead of you, but one that is worthwhile if you want to restore your device to the good speed and functionality it had before you loaded it up.

There are several approaches, some would recommend another app to find out which apps/widgets are most busy. I do not recommend adding anything, but subtracting instead. ;)

Have a long look in your app drawer and in the widget list (access the widget list by scrolling to a screen with plenty of open space on it and long press there, then select "add widget" from the list.. don't add a widget, just look at the list and note all widgets there).

Now list all apps and widgets which have background updating and syncing, then go into menu > settings > applications > manage applications > and click the "all" tab, then go into each of the apps/widgets that you've noted have background updating and/or syncing (weather, alarms, email, Facebook, some games, etc) and clear data and cache on all of them.

When finished, reboot the phone and configure things to update and sync manually rather than autosync or updating in the background.

Now it's time to start paring out apps and widgets. Uninstall things you don't really need.

Frisco,

First of all thanks for your detailed reply. It is really encouraging to see senior members taking time to reply in detail to new members.

As I type this, I have already started implementing your suggestions, although, I have already been doing this periodically. I have already set the background syncing to off and syn manually periodically. I regularly clear the cache as per the method described by you and also by using apps2sd application.

Yes, I agree that I have loads of applications, but whats the point in owning a android phone If I am unable to use the power of various apps available. Even then I have in the past uninstalled applications which I suspect cud be updating in the background (whatsapp messenger, cricket score apps, games etc). However the problem still persists..

As you have rightly said the problem is probably due background syncing of some applications, which I am unable to pin point.

Thanks once again for your reply.

I see that you are on 2.2 suggest you flash 2.2.1 jpy which is faster and addresses a lot of batter issues with 2.2 froyo is prone to lag. Have tried 2.2.1 though it's not officially available in india.. You can try flashing that and see the difference.. But backup all your apps before you do that

Can you guide me with a link as how to do it? Is it safe?
