Root [BOUNTY - Metropcs Samsung Galaxy Indulge 4g SCH- R910]

Hey guys i registered here so that i can post this. got a few questions about the indulge

1. Full Root(New Superuser.apk)

this shouldnt be to difficult

2. Clockwork Recovery

got a few people on the acs team that can knock this out with out a problem

3. Custom Rom(Talk and surf, Better Battery Life, Native Hotspot Support, Removal of Samsung Block)

here is where im confused about, talk and surf? metropcs is cdma and even still verizon is the only one with voLTE and they are still beta testing it, there is no way to get voice and data at the same time.. sorry drawback of cdma. better battery life should be a breeze with a custom kernel. the hotspot could be a bit of a POA as the frameworks can be a bit tricky. whats this about samsung block? you mean the bloatware or what?

4. Nand Lock

none of the other galaxy s models have a nand lock how sure are yall that this one does? if so then root isnt impossible but it makes it a WHOLE lot harder and with it increases the chances of bricking from .001 to 5%.

also is there any info i can get from yall, chipsets? factory dumps? anyone have a copy of the files so i can look at them?

To answer your questions:

1. If the phone was so easy to root it would have been done so like any other phone a couple days after release. You can see all that we tried here:

http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-indulge/275462-first-attempt-rooting.html

In the end we had to use ADB rageagainstthecage to temp root, and push everything. Even though we have busybox, the SU/superuser acess is open ended. Which can be bad.

3. Other metro phones are able to do talk/data acess at the same time. A couple examples: Samsung Code I220, LG optimus MS690. They are 3G/RTTx1 phones though, not 4G LTE.

As for using LTE at the same time, I don't see why not. Metro's base network is CDMA, and LTE is GSM. Meaning you switch bandwidth when using data, and I believe the towers have a seperate box solely for the LTE. So I don't see why it can't be done simultaneously. It probably relates to the radio part being locked (which is why people claimed it was NAND locked)

4. People say NAND lock, because every single other means of rooting the phone was impossible. Even though we got it rooted, its not "fully" rooted. Had to basically use the exploit to open temp root, and push files on it. Some files don't stay after reboot. In all honesty no one really knows exactly what is locked on the phone. I can tell you we got CWM to work on the phone, but it crashes when you try to make a back up, and doesn't push files from SD card.

http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-indulge/297066-so-does-cwm-work-our-phones.html

In all honesty we got no help from any other forums, and posted tons of crap on just about all of them. XDA rejected our plea for help because metro was not one of the TOP 4 providers (even though after the Tmobile/at&t merge they will be lol). RJSweezy even offered to send a FRU model (in case you don't now what this means, basically a warranty unit that's reserved for customers) to the person who would be doing this for testing/diagnose purposes. Not sure if his offer still stands.

3. correct it doesnt use voLTE, but it does do data over LTE and voice over CDMA, people are wondering why both radios cant be used at the same time. and samsung's filings with FCC state that this functionality is blocked at the request of metroPCS.

4. at first we thought it was nand locked but not it looks like that may not be the case. We have gotten the phone somewhat fully rooted but it still does some strange things. Also even after root, some apk packages just refuse to install, they either say they are invalid or that it just wont install. The apps that this happens with are superuser.apk (even with a newer version) and also most of the tethering apps refuse to install, as if samsung has some sort of block either on the binaries themselves or something inside them.

Ok well the voLTE may have things inside the phone that may enable that but it also could be server side, either way thats not going to be of any use till we own the phone.

in regards to the whole rooting aspect of it all samsung may have placed crap to verify the files, i know on the tmobile g2 for a long time if anything was done it was assumed it would just reflash stock right over with a reboot. has anyone found any documentation to find out what the cpu, onboard storage is etc etc? just seems rather odd that this phone would have so much security on it when even newer Samsung phones coming out lack it. so it looks like we need to figure how and why crap isnt staying where it needs to be. does anyone have a dump of the phones files?

i am sorry to hear that, we as android users should be sharing and helping not exiling each other.

stuff stays where its put, its just some things dont install.

example, I can push superuser onto the phone and it will stay after a reboot, however it wont run or install.

right now we are just using an SU that doesnt have the superuser hook and it just grants root to all apps.

samsung has posted the source code for the indulge up on their site.

Sorry for disappearing after attempting to build a kernel and having my comp take a dump. I should have some free time this week so I'm at least going to attempt to do a kernel build. I'm still fuzzy on how to get a newly built kernel onto the phone of course. On the flip side, I can't risk bricking my phone so I'm pondering my options.

i am newly registered here but i have been secretly stalking the Indulge dedicated posts. this site helped me out a lot with my Optimus M but i am craving the Indulge right now seeing as Metro won't release another 4G phone for a while (although i've read they're getting a Tablet Q3 this year.) i will fix up my profile in due time but...

i am cheering for the native WiFi tethering. that is the only main interest in me buying that phone.

I am willing to donate $15

now i am just debating on if i should purchase the phone this weekend or if i should wait until the end of the month.. not sure which is best..

Good luck to the one who takes this bounty head on, i have a friend who is an entry level rooter in the Android world i told him about this and he recommended i present this post to a friend of his attention who is very advanced in rooting Android devices, i shall do that tomorrow. the more that work on this the better right?

I'll tell you what I've been told: if you already made up your mind about getting the phone, then waiting won't do you any good. Sadly, I've not heard a peep about mail in rebates as of late, so waiting is only robbing you of some of the potential fun to be had!
Needless to say, I got the phone the very next day.
