Root Rooting Questions

New to the forum and looking for some assistance. I finally received the 2.2.2 upgrade on my transform. Now I am considering rooting so that I can use wi-fi tether without paying a ton of money. What is the safest way to root, and what are some essentials to rooting. (titanium back-up, Etc.)
Also, my wife's transform won't allow her to connect g-mail, so she is unable to gain access to the market. Is there any work around for that issue. Thanks to all in advance.

She should try doing a factory reset on her phone and for rooting go to youtube and search wwjoshdew hes a cool guy who makes all kinds of helpful videos on this stuff

I hate sounding like Sprint Customer Service, but yeah a factory restore would probably be the best.

Is there a way to back up her contacts etc before doing a factory restore so that she doesn't have to enter them all back in? Thanks for the help

They're backed up automatically to her gmail account. When you enter the account details after rooting (like if you go to the market it'll make you) it'll automatically resync her contacts.
If you want them saved to the SD card, go to the contact list, hit the menu soft key, import/export, then export to SD

I am considering rooting and have read the guide and watched wwjoshdew 's videos. I wonder if I could get a little imput maybe pro/con style.

Specifically:
1. If for some reason I don't like it, can I make it the way it is?
2. I have read the void warranty situ and don't love that. Can I make it the way it was if I have to take it back to the store?
3. Anything you think is something I should think about?

1. Your sentence is incomplete so let me interpret.... If you don't like the way you change your phone, can you change it back or to something different? Yes.
2. Yes, and that's the beauty of it all.
3. What file system you want, and what kernel you want. Perhaps a ROM in the future, like Ubuntdroid when released.

Cyanogen, for Samsung. It's not ACTUALLY Cyanogen, but for us Samsung owners, it's the epic and huge amount of development we were waiting for. Get a look at it on YouTube. "Incercept Ubuntdroid"
