Help Not my week, now I have an issue with the quick launch bar

This is the second weird issue with my phone this week. I'm wondering if something more systemic has happened to my phone.

I have the Samsung Captivate Galaxy S. I use the stock launcher. The quick launch bar at the bottom includes icons for phone, email, browser, and applications. Somehow I have managed to delete the icon for email. I didn't know you could do that.

Without resorting to a third-party launcher is it possible to:

a.) Restore my email icon
OR
b.) Put my Gmail icon there instead

I'm hunch is "no". Every thread I've found about this suggests using a third-part launcher. My phone is rooted and I have adb on my laptop, so I could muck around in phone need be.

Easy - if you're using the touchwiz, then go to the app drawer (open up apps), then click "edit", and you can put the email icon back there. Or the Gmail icon.

You lost me here. I mistook touchwiz for a third-party app. It's not. It's the touchscreen interface created by Samsung. You say go to the app drawer and then click edit? What is the app drawer and where is the edit button? When I click "Applications" I see my apps, but I don't see edit.
