3dEvo: Pre-release miscellany

Well, right now I'm on a Samsung Seek until or IF my Smartphone ever gets repaired. It's been "being repaired" for 38 days now. My Smartphone is a Palm Pre. Please don't laugh. :p I hate the thing

You know what's interesting coming into the Android community? I've noticed most of the "geeks" or Technofile type of people are all HTC fans and *hate* Samsung phones. But when asked they wont usually give you a straight answer as to why other than "poor customer service".

The fact that so many Technologically inclined people (like myself) are HTC fans is a big plus towards flipping that coin towards the Evo3D. I build my own gaming rigs and have been doing so for over 10 years...

When I come into the Evo3D or HTC forums they feel like "my people" if that makes sense LOL... It's like going to Comicon, you just feel home. Hahaha...

I don't like the looks of them mostly. Cheap plasticy feel and generally not as well build as htc. took forever for epic to get froyo which really is unacceptable seeing how big of an update it was. they also had gps issues from what i read. now with the newer models they seem to have most of this worked out :)

Still not a fan of the dual cameras protruding out....can't even lay it on its back without expecting scratches to build through normal use.

EDIT: ACTUALLY, under close examination....it doesn't protrude that much...if at all. Kudos to Sprint + HTC.

I know. and the big red ring around them makes it really stand out lol.
there are pics out with a black ring... i will definitely be looking for one of those. sounds like they really had to cram everything in to make it all work but it would have been nice to have a the camera(s) flush with the back of the phone.

If you've seen pictures of the phone from the side, you'll notice the camera section actually doesn't stick all too far out from the phone. I'd say it's closer in than the EVO's camera.

This blows my mind... I didn't expect to see the S2 states-side until the end of the year... every time I think I know which phone I'm going to get another news story like this break... this is insane. The Evo3D and the S2 back to back? NUTS! How can you possibly decide between these two beasts!?!?

I wish I had the confidence and the experience with Android, the manufacturers, the interfaces, and the technical specifications to be that confident in my choices here.

If this was a PC, TV, Laptop, or almost any other piece of technology I would know instantly what I would want. I'm ignorant here still even though I've really been doing some hard research. Both on these forums and playing with the phones in-store.

well from my experience.. here is what I got.

each time HTC and Sammy went head to head.. Sammy ALWAYS brought the big guns.. with specs to die for. each time htc came out on top.

Hero vs Moment ... Hero won
Evo vs Epic ... EVO won
e3d vs GS2... (TBD)

reasons why htc came out on top:
OEM support for the updates and release of code to the dev community.
Huge support from the dev community.
I like Sense.

What me laugh? Last night, I actually tried to activate a Curve 8330 (yes, a berry *hanging head in shame*) because my Pre has been doing some, well, interesting things. Had the online activation worked... But it didn't, and didn't feel like dealing with CS (and still don't). As long as it survives another 18 hours to get me home...

Been rockin my "naked" EVO since the end of June 2010. Naked.. with a "protruding lens"... Take it on a 5 mile hike in the arizona desert almost every day... really dont "baby" the phone at all... screen and lens are scratch free.. flawless. The EVO 4G was built like a tank... I'd imagine the EVO 3D will be similar.

First video recorded with the EVO 3D?

HTC Dual-Core Sense 3 with HTC EVO 3D & HTC Sensation 4G Exclusive Wireless and Mobile News Video - WIRELESS AND MOBILE NEWS

YouTube - ‪HTC EVO 3D, HTC Sensation 4G & HTC Sense from Wireless and Mobile News‬‏

Quote from article

"We recorded it in regular video from an HTC EVO 3D with no special light or settings."

If so I'm very impressed with both sound quality(huge improvement over the first EVO) and the video quality looks really smooth with a really nice fps.

I was just about to link this. Good thing I read every post on this thread.

HTC is really throwing down the gauntlet with HTCdev.com. I think it's very, very interesting that HTC has taken the bootloader resolution one step further. Instead of trying to protect or simply turn a blind-eye to the modding community, they've chosen to embrace it. It could mean that HTC phones become the gold standard for modding, next to the Nexus line.

What? You thought the only optical illusion the phone had was the 3D screen? :p

For me, my dedication to htc started with windows mobile phones, but after all the hours devoted to windows mobile I got tired of jumping through hoops to customize.

When I got my EVO, it wasn't necessarily the fact that it was HTC, but more-so android and choosing the best phone available. If I didn't like not having a physical qwerty, I would've switched to the epic. As time went by, I realized how much more dedicated htc and motorola were to android phone support than samsung. That was taking into consideration all android phones accross different providers.

Customer service is always a number 1 priority to me.

As Mr. Bean would say, I'm gonna go with: Magic!

Srsly. How does Richboy know that?

Can't wait to find out - and see!

well i searched and found the website . And the guy got a hold of the phone and post a video of it . He also commented about doing a full review soon . so it seems like he has the phone since he was playing with it at a restaurant..

FYI, for benchmark lovers, a couple of his screenshots include some, so we can get a better feel for real performance than the 1.5GHz MSM8660 review he posted. Namely GLBenchmark Egypt at 21.0FPS and Pro at 53.4FPS. Compare with some others here: AnandTech - Dual Core Snapdragon GPU Performance Explored - 1.5 GHz MSM8660 and Adreno 220 Benchmarks, and this puts the EVO3D's 1.2GHz/Adreno220 clearly in the same ballpark as the SGX540 and Tegra2, especially counting the qHD resolution. (Since these benchmarks apparently always run at the device's native res, the EVO 3D performance will take a hit compared to the 800x480 devices.)

He's got a sunspider and browsermark capture as well, but I haven't looked up comparable results.

(Standard qualification about lies, darned lies, statistics, and benchmarks applies.)
